The 45th César Awards took place on February 28, 2020 in the Salle Pleyel in Paris . The film prizes awarded by the French Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma for the best productions of the cinema year 2019 were awarded in 22 categories; there were also special prices.

The annually changing chairmanship of the gala was taken over by Sandrine Kiberlain . Actress Florence Foresti , who last moderated the evening in 2016, was the moderator ("maîtresse de cérémonie") . The event was broadcast live on French television channel Canal + .

After the audience award had gone to the film with the most moviegoers of the year since 2018, the Académie changed the award guidelines for 2020: The award now went to one of the five most-visited films of the year, with the winner being chosen by the Académie. The nominations for the César 2020 were announced on January 29, 2020.

In mid-February 2020, the board of the César Academy resigned after criticism of the 12 nominations for Roman Polański's intrigue , among other things . Prior to this, around 400 celebrities from the French film scene had written an open letter in the daily newspaper Le Monde calling for a “profound reform” of the private law institution “because of a lack of transparency that bordered on nepotism ”. The French Minister of Culture Franck Riester declared hours before the award ceremony that it was a negative signal, at a moment when “the cloak of silence was being lifted from the sexual and sexist attacks of the past”, the award for best director was awarded to Polański forgive. During the award ceremony for Polański, numerous actresses present left the room demonstratively.

For the first time in the history of the Césars, no honorary award was given; the price was originally intended to be awarded to Brad Pitt , who declined to receive an award in the wake of the Polański controversy.
