Curtain up for Cyrano is a 2018 French - Belgian film directed by Alexis Michalik .

action

In December 1895, the young poet Edmond Rostand brought his poem La princesse lointaine onto the stage, with his greatest admirer Sarah Bernhardt reciting the piece. The performance is a big failure. Edmond's wife Rosemonde is rebuilding him so he should just write a masterpiece. Two years later, Edmond is caught in an artistic crisis and has not yet written a line for his piece. Sarah Bernhardt appears surprisingly at his place and tells him that he has an appointment in the afternoon at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin with the famous theater director and actor Constant Coquelin to present his new play. Edmond escapes to Monsieur Honoré's café, who takes him to his library and suggests that he write a play based on the life of Cyrano de Bergerac . Edmond improvises when he meets Coquelin, but he is enthusiastic about the idea of the hero with the big nose and orders a three-act play from Edmond.

Edmond meets shortly afterwards with his friend, the actor Léonidas Volny, known as Léo. He fell in love with the young costume designer Jeanne. Because she is bringing a friend and the married Edmond wants to remain incognito, Léo introduces him to Jeanne as Georges. Jeanne declares that she is enthusiastic about Edmond Rostand, even if she has never met him. Some time later, Edmond and Léo see Jeanne again, who rejects the impetuous Léo. Edmond explains to Léo that the romantic Jeanne must be won over with poetry. Standing under a balcony, he whispers to Léo rhymes, which Léo Jeanne recites, and soon speaks the rhymes himself until Jeanne agrees to meet Léo. The basic idea for the piece Cyrano de Bergerac has been found.

In the following years Jeanne and Léo write to each other, Edmond writing the letters for Léo, who is not gifted in writing. After a while, Edmond explains to his friend that he should wait until Jeanne answers on his own. Edmond Jeanne continues to write without his friend's knowledge and thus finds new scenes for his play. This has to be done quickly and a success, as Coquelin is on the verge of ruin due to previous failures. The first act is soon written and the cast has also been found: Cyrano is played by Coquelin, Léo takes on the role of the amorous Christian, while Roxane is played by the diva Maria Legault.

The third act of the play is over and Jeanne is so entranced by Edmond's letters, which she takes to be Léos, that she invites him to her hotel. Edmond rushes after Léo, who finally realizes that he has won Jeanne's love over Edmond's letters. Edmond asserts that Jeanne is just his muse. A little later Jeanne comes to Paris and becomes Maria Legault's cloakroom. During the rehearsals for the play, she realizes that parts of the letters to her can be found in the play and also that "Georges" is actually Edmond, whom she admires. Jeanne reveals to Edmond that she loves him, but Edmond rejects her: he just wants to desire her because he can be so creative. Even before his jealous wife, he asserts that he has no relationship with Jeanne. The discussion with Jeanne shows Edmond that the piece does not have to be a three-stroke but a five-stroke. A meeting with Anton Chekhov in a brothel ultimately leads to Edmond turning the comedy into a tragedy in which Cyrano dies in the end. He rewrites the whole piece accordingly. The premiere of the play was ultimately a great success, even if there were mishaps, so Maria had an accident after the first act and was spontaneously replaced by Jeanne. Léo and Jeanne become a couple, and Edmond and Rosemonde also make up.

production

The Divadlo Josefa Kajetána Tyla in Plzeň , location of all the theater scenes

Curtain up for Cyrano is the feature film directing debut of actor Alexis Michalik. He filmed his own play Edmond , which he staged at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal in 2016 and which was awarded five Molières in 2017 . The inspiration for the play and film was the 1999 film Shakespeare in Love , in which William Shakespeare is inspired by a muse to write Romeo and Juliet . A theatrical performance of Shakespeare in Love in London inspired Michalik to initially work on the material for the theater, as work on the film was already underway, but no sponsors could be found. It was only the success of the play that made the film possible. Michalik himself took on the role of Georges Feydeau in the curtain for Cyrano .

Saint-Pierre Abbey in Moissac, location of the final scene of the play in the film

The film was shot in the Czech Republic , including Prague and Karlovy Vary , from January to March 2018 . The monastery scenes in the fifth act of the performance of Cyrano de Bergerac in the film were created in the Abbey of Saint-Pierre . The theater recordings were shot in the Divadlo Josefa Kajetána Tyla in Plzeň , which was allowed to be used for the shooting for 25 days. Thierry Delettre created the costumes, and Franck Schwarz designed the film . During the end credits, various actors are featured in the performance of Cyrano de Bergerac , including Constant Coquelin, Jean Marais , José Ferrer and Gérard Depardieu .

Curtain up for Cyrano had its world premiere on August 22, 2018 at the Festival du film francophone d'Angoulême and was released in French cinemas on January 9, 2019. The film also opened in German cinemas on March 21, 2019.
