The 43rd César Awards took place on March 2, 2018 in the Salle Pleyel in Paris . The film prizes awarded by the French Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma for the best productions of the cinema year 2017 were awarded in 22 categories. The French actress Vanessa Paradis took over the chairmanship of the gala, which changes every year . Actor Manu Payet led the evening as moderator (“maître cérémonie”) .

When the nominations were announced on January 31, 2018, the AIDS activist drama 120 BPM by Robin Campillo , which won awards at the Cannes Film Festival, and the tragicomedy Au revoir là-haut by Albert Dupontel , a film adaptation of the award-winning novel of the same name by Pierre Lemaitre (Ger. Title: See you up there ), the favorites field with 13 nominations each. The most successful was 120 BPM , which was able to convert six of its nominations into victories, including the award for the best film of the year . For the first time in the history of the Césars, an audience award was also awarded for the best film ("César du public"), made by the Franco-Belgian action comedy The Super Cops - Always Crazy! won by Dany Boon . During the event, the late actors Mireille Darc and Johnny Hallyday were remembered .

The award ceremony was dominated by the #MeToo debate about abuse of power and sexual violence in the entertainment industry, which is why many participants wore a white ribbon as a sign of solidarity. The Spanish actress Penélope Cruz , who had been awarded the honorary award of the French Film Academy, was already the winner before the award ceremony .

The event was broadcast live on French television channel Canal + . A little more than two million television viewers saw the award ceremony, which corresponds to an increased market share of 11.4 percent compared to the previous year (10.5 percent with 1.9 million viewers).
