Ruben Östlund
Claes Olle Ruben Östlund (born April 13, 1974 in Styrsö , Västra Götalands län , Sweden ) is a Swedish film director and screenwriter .
Life
After Ruben Östlund had produced some ski films in the early 1990s, he decided in 1998 to enroll at Högskolan för Fotografi och Film in Gothenburg for a three-year course, which he finished in 2001. In addition to a few short films and documentaries, he released his first feature film in 2004, Guitar Mongot . To make this film, he relied on amateur actors. With the exception of Maria Lundqvist , his second feature film De ofrivilliga from 2008, for which he received a Guldbaggen nomination in the categories of Best Director and Best Screenplay , only featured amateur actors.
In his third feature film, Play - Nur ein Spiel? he worked again with amateur actors. The film tells the story of an African lower-class gang who stole white middle-class children with dubious tricks. When the film was released in Sweden, Östlund was exposed to racist allegations almost daily. But international critics who saw the film at film festivals such as the 2011 Cannes Film Festival or the Tromsø Internasjonale Film Festival were of the opinion that the film played skillfully with racist prejudice and praised the film consistently. The film was awarded the Audience Prize and the Peace Prize in Tromsø, among others. At the Swedish Guldbaggen film award, Östlund received the award for best director for the first time .
In 2014 Östlund wrote the screenplay and directed the feature film Force Majeure with Johannes Kuhnke and Lisa Loven Kongsli in the lead roles. Praised by film-dienst as a “formally brilliant drama”, “as an inventory of the nuclear family and their role models permeated with satirical tones”, Östlund's fourth feature film won over 30 international film and festival prizes and was awarded the Oscar and Golden Globe awards in each category "Best Foreign Language Film" nominated. In Sweden, the director won the Guldbaggen in the categories of directing, screenwriting and editing, while Force Majeure won the category Best Film against Roy Andersson's A Dove Sitting on a Branch and Thinking About Life .
After the success of Force Majeure , Östlund staged The Square (2017), a similar satirical drama that is set in the Stockholm art scene. The film ran in competition at the Cannes Film Festival , where Östlund became the first Swedish director to win the Palme d' Or. The 2017 European Film Awards were followed by awards in all five nominated categories - best film, best comedy, best actor ( Claes Bang ) and the director and screenplay award for Östlund. In 2018, Oscar and Golden Globe nominations followed, each in the category of Best Foreign Language Film .
In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
