A pigeon sits on a branch and thinks about life (original title: En duva satt på en gren och funderade på tillvaron ) is a Swedish film from 2014 by Roy Andersson . After Songs from the Second Floor  (2000) and The Youngest Thunderstorm  (2007), the film is the conclusion of Andersson's trilogy about human beings (Swedish: " Du levande-trilogin "). The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival , where the film was awarded the Golden Lion for Best Film . In Germany, the film opened in cinemas on January 1, 2015.

action

The two sales representatives Jonathan and Sam move through the Swedish provinces to sell the three joke articles vampire teeth, salmon bags and masks "Gevatter Einzahn". They are quite unsuccessful in what they do, but in their day-to-day work they meet numerous bizarre figures, for example a dance teacher who is hopelessly in love with one of her students, an old man who complains of his suffering in the pub, or Karl XII. who orders another mineral water before going into battle.

background

Pieter Bruegel the Elder:
"The Hunters in the Snow" (1556)

The film title refers to the painting The Hunters in the Snow by Pieter Bruegel the Elder from 1556. The picture shows a rural winter scene with some birds sitting on the branches of the trees. Andersson remarked that he imagined the birds watching the scenery and marveling at the goings-on. He understands the film title as a paraphrase for “'what we actually do', that's what the film is about”.

The film was made entirely in a building in Stockholm's Östermalm district , which has housed Andersson's production company and a small studio for 30 years. All sets and backgrounds were made of paper, cardboard and wood, mostly as miniatures, so that the production of the 39 settings sometimes took months. Andersson worked on the film for four consecutive years.

criticism

The film received mostly positive reviews from the critics. On US review website Rotten Tomatoes , 89% of reviews are positive, out of a total of 88 reviews. The average rating is 7.8 out of 10 points. At Metacritic , the film received a rating of 81 out of 100 from a total of 23 reviews.

The industry journal Variety described the film as a "master class of pointed humor", whereby "speed and repetitions with the skills of an experienced concert pianist" are used. The Hollywood Reporter noted that the film "barely makes people laugh out loud" despite "having some potential for malicious humor in the absurdities of life."

The film-dienst described the "philosophical-misanthropic [n]" film as a "loose sequence of peculiar scenes, vaguely connected through places, themes and characters, which oscillate between cynicism, despair and tragedy". The "well-stylized [...] scenes, choreographed down to the last detail, are strangely beautiful and radiate something artificially-mannered." The German film website kino.de judged that the "undisputed master of the absurd" was perfecting "playing with time in this kaleidoscope of the human and the all too human". The "line between pain and comedy, monster and human" is only thin.
