Roy Andersson (born March 31, 1943 in Gothenburg ) is a Swedish director and screenwriter.

Life

Roy Andersson first studied literary history and philosophy before attending the college of the Swedish Film Institute from 1967 . In 1968 he worked as co-director on Bo Widerberg's worker film Adalen 31 (1969). Andersson's breakthrough as a director came with his first own feature film A Swedish Love Story (1970), for which he also wrote the screenplay. The story of two teenagers who experience their first love won several awards at the Berlin Film Festival, which ended prematurely, as well as the Guldbagge for best Swedish film. Andersson could not build on this critical and popular success with his following deep black society satire Giliap (1975) with Thommy Berggren in the title role. After the financial failure of this absurd slapstick comedy about the exploited employees of a shabby hotel, he withdrew from the feature film and directed only a few short films ( Någonting har hänt , 1987; World of Glory , 1991) to himself instead established in the advertising industry, where he realized more than 300 commercials in two and a half decades and was awarded the Cannes Golden Lion eight times . In 1993, the AIDS educational film Någonting har hänt ( Something Has Happened ), originally commissioned 6 years earlier by the Swedish health authorities, caused a scandal and traced the HI virus back to secret American laboratory tests.

For Andersson, success in the cinema did not return until his third feature film, Songs from the Second Floor (2000), which cemented Andersson's personal style. Songs from the Second Floor is characterized by long shots , absurd comedy, grotesques , caricatures of Swedish culture and anti-capitalist themes. The film was the prelude to Andersson's trilogy about human beings (Swedish: "Du levande-trilogin"), which continued with The Youngest Thunderstorm (2007) and ended with A Dove Sitting on a Branch and Thinking About Life (2014) has been. The first two parts were again awarded the Guldbagge for best film of the year in Sweden, as well as the directing and screenplay award. For the last part, a dove sits on a branch and thinks about life , Andersson won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival , his greatest international success to date. The film was also nominated for seven Guldbagge and was awarded the European Film Prize for best film comedy .

In 2019 Andersson completed his sixth feature film, About Infinity , which was again invited to the competition at the Venice Film Festival .
