Yvan Attal (born January 4, 1965 in Tel Aviv ) is a French actor and director .

biography

Attal grew up in Créteil , a suburb to the southeast of Paris . His parents, Jewish pieds-noirs , moved there in 1962 after Algeria gained independence . Even as a child he was enthusiastic about the cinema , and especially Coppola's film adaptation of Mario Puzo's The Godfather gave rise to the desire to work in this area himself. At the age of nineteen he began his acting training at the Cours Florent in Paris. In 1988 he made his theatrical debut in Biloxi Blues, based on a play by Neil Simon . His breakthrough came in 1989 with the film A World Without Pity by Éric Rochant . For this Attal was awarded the César for the best young actor. As early as 1991 he was filming Amouresuse alongside Charlotte Gainsbourg . In the following years he made various films and received the Jean Gabin Prize in 1997 . In the same year he directed the short film I Got a Woman . He made his debut as a feature film director in 2001 with Meine Frau, the actress who earned him a César nomination. He received further nominations for France's national film award for his film roles as an escaped prison inmate in Bon voyage (2003) and as a kidnapping victim in ransom (2009).

Attal has appeared in front of the camera for Michael Winterbottom , Steven Spielberg , Claude Lelouch and Sydney Pollack , among others . He also lends his voice to Tom Cruise for the French-language dubbing .

Attal has been with Charlotte Gainsbourg , daughter of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin , since 1991 . They have three children together.
