In 1951 Klaus Barbie, also known as the “butcher of Lyon ”, went into hiding in Bolivia . With support from the USA , he works for the Bolivian secret service. In the 1970s, Serge and Beate Klarsfeld followed his trail that led to La Paz .

The film Die Hetzjagd is based on a true story. It is about a German-French couple who have made it their life's work to research the whereabouts of Nazi war criminals. In 1971, many of the events of World War II and memories of the Holocaust slowly faded into the background.

Many of the surviving Nazi - war criminals to go into hiding undetected in Germany or abroad. The Klarsfeld couple decided to track them down and bring them to justice. They took up the Barbie case when the Munich court dropped the case against him for lack of evidence. A German public prosecutor advises them that Barbie is supposed to be in South America. The research by the Klarsfelds shows that he has built a new life in Bolivia under the name of Klaus Altmann. Barbie feels safe there. However, the Klarsfelds try to find him in order to forcibly kidnap him if necessary. Not until 1983, twelve years after its discovery, did Bolivia finally extradite Barbie to France .

Criticisms and reviews (selection)

  • The lexicon of international films saw a "committed, well-cast (television) drama with echoes of spy films and thrillers."
  • Filmreporter.de gives a rather negative summary: “In 108 minutes of playing time, the drama gets bogged down in the meticulous reconstruction of trips abroad, auditions and requests from the Klarsfelds. Anyone who tells awkward and unimaginative staging simply does not entertain. Wooden, explanatory dialogues and a colorless Franka Potente turn the desk war over the extradition of a murderer into a bland film experience. "
  • Cinema.de judges "An unbelievable piece of contemporary history!"
  • Christian Buß wrote in his review for Der Spiegel: “ The Hetzjagd gains its sharpness primarily through the comparison of the two main characters - here the notorious housewife, there the notorious hunter. And with the same intransigence with which Klarsfeld scrubs the tub at home, she is now trying to get rid of the particularly stubborn Nazi filth, Barbie. Housewife honor, so to speak. "
