Serge Klarsfeld
Serge Klarsfeld (born September 17, 1935 in Bucharest ) is a French lawyer and historian .
Life
Serge Klarsfeld was born on September 17, 1935 to Jewish parents (Raissa and Arno Klarsfeld) in Bucharest ( Romania ). The parents met in Paris in 1929 . After the German invasion in June 1940 , they fled to the unoccupied zone of France ( zone libre ). As a child in Nice , Serge Klarsfeld was almost the victim of one of the great raids by Alois Brunner's command (September 30, 1943). The family had hidden behind a double wall of a closet , but the father, who had stayed in the apartment so that the Gestapo would not become suspicious, was arrested, deported and murdered in Auschwitz .
After the war, Klarsfeld studied history at the Sorbonne and politics at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris (IEP). He graduated in 1960 with a degree in political science. Klarsfeld received his doctorate (French Docteur ès lettres ). From 1970 Klarsfeld studied law and became a lawyer in Paris.
He met his future wife Beate Künzel in 1960. After Klarsfeld took up a position at ORTF in 1963 , they got married. A short time later, Klarsfeld resigned from the radio and went to the grain trading company "Continental Grain". There he was fired in 1970. Beate caused a worldwide sensation when, on November 7, 1968, she publicly slapped the then Chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger , whom she accused of his Nazi past.
Serge Klarsfeld founded the Association des fils et filles des déportés juifs de France in 1979 together with his wife .
Klarsfeld is one of the most prominent researchers who tracked down and undiscovered perpetrators of the Holocaust after 1945, mainly in France and Germany, and brought them to justice. It is thanks to him and his wife, among others, that Nazi criminals and collaborators such as Klaus Barbie , René Bousquet , Jean Leguay , Maurice Papon , Paul Touvier , Kurt Lischka , Ernst Heinrichsohn and Herbert M. Hagen are brought to justice or at least how such as Ernst Achenbach , were unmasked. Klarsfeld also succeeded in locating Alois Brunner , his former pursuer, but Syria, where Brunner is said to have worked for the secret service, refused to extradite .
Klarsfeld is the author of a standard work on the persecution of Jews in France, "Vichy - Auschwitz" (also published in German under the same title). His son Arno Klarsfeld is a well-known lawyer and advisor to Nicolas Sarkozy , French President from May 2007 to May 2012. The daughter Lida Myriam (* 1973) also comes from his marriage to Beate Klarsfeld.
The Hunt for Klaus Barbie was filmed in 2008 under the title Die Hetzjagd .
Together with his wife Beate Klarsfeld, he received the Federal Cross of Merit in May 2015. In October 2015 both were from UNESCO to UNESCO Special Envoy for Education on the Holocaust and the prevention of genocide appointed.
