Galactic is an American group from New Orleans .

The group is mainly assigned to the styles of jazz and funk , although they created a completely independent style of music through the influences of numerous other genres such as rap , hip-hop , go-go , electronic music , Latin American music , rock and blues .

Band history

Galactic was created on the initiative of Jeff Raines and Robert Mercurio, who - born in Washington DC - went to study in New Orleans and were impressed by the radio scene there. The Meters and Professor Longhair were decisive for the scene back then . Raines and Mercurio teamed up with drummer Stanton Moore, who over the years became the driving force of the band. Under the name "Galactic Prophylactic" Galactic formed as an octet in 1994, but two musicians left the band quickly. The band still exists today in its former line-up, with the singer Theryl DeClouet temporarily strengthening the sextet. This left Galactic in 2004, so that the band came back to the instrumental music.

Over the years, the band added more and more electronic elements to their music. Moore used phrase samplers that simulated a basic drum rhythm while he played along with it. This created unreal and curious drum accompaniment. Ellman, the saxophonist and harmonica player, often distorts his instrument so that it sounds similar to an electric guitar.

The band is known for inviting guest musicians from New Orleans to play on stage with them. These included the Dirty Dozen Brass Band , The Neville Brothers , Brian Seeger, George Porter from the Meters and many others. Galactic are often on tour and have played with Live , Counting Crows , the Allman Brothers Band , The Roots , Widespread Panic , BB King and Jurassic 5 .

Galactic regularly place high on the US jazz album charts. With the album From the Corner to the Block they put the focus on hip-hop in 2007 and entered the R&B / hip-hop charts. The album Ya-Ka-May was her most successful to date in 2010, her fourth top ten album made it to number 3 in the jazz charts and made it onto the official Billboard 200 for the first time .
