Widespread Panic is an American southern rock band from Athens , Georgia .

Widespread Panic 2007

history

The band emerged from a weekly jam session at the University of Georgia in 1985 and first performed on February 24 under the name Widespread Panic. Founding members were singer and guitarist John Bell , guitarist Michael Houser , bassist Dave Schools and drummer Todd Nance . After initially playing cover songs by Van Morrison , Grateful Dead and Traffic , the band's repertoire quickly expanded.

In February 1986, Sleepy Monkey was the band's first single. From October of the same year, Sonny Ortiz played regularly with the group, but it was not until 1989 before he was accepted as an official member. On February 4, 1988, Landslide Records released their debut album Space Wrangler . This and the following tour created an ever-growing fan base and Widespread Panic switched to the major label Capricorn Records in 1991 , where the album Widespread Panic was released that same year .

In 1993 they worked with Vic Chesnutt . Under the name brute. the album Nine High a Pallet was recorded, which was only released in 1995. In 2002 a second album was released, which was also the result of this temporary cooperation.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the group peaked when they played over 250 concerts a year and, along with Phish, were among the most popular bands in the southern states. Several records were set with sold out concerts.

In June 2002, at the beginning of the annual summer tour, the band had to cope with a setback. Michael Houser had to cancel the tour for health reasons; in August 2002 he died of cancer. George McConnell took his place.

After 18 years together, the band took a break in 2004, but began their next tour in March 2005. In the fall of 2006, George McConnell left the band and was replaced by Jimmy Herring . From 2007 to 2011 the band toured and toured the United States. With concerts that are constantly sold out, sometimes for three days in a row in the same city, the band enjoys great popularity. At the end of July 2011 they gave two concerts in Japan for the first time. In 2012 the band took a break from touring, and since spring 2013 they have been touring the United States again. In September 2014, Devon Trucks , the brother of guitarist Derek Trucks , temporarily replaced Todd Nance as drummer, then finally from February 2016 after Nance had played three more concerts with the band.

Widespread Panic has sold over three million albums to date.

The 13th studio album Street Dogs was released on September 25, 2015 .
