Summary

Film year 2011 and voting mode

The nominations were announced on January 27, 2012 in the Parisian restaurant Le Fouquet’s on the Champs-Élysées . With more than 215 million admissions, 2011 was the most successful year for French film since 1966, according to Alain Terzian , President of the Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma , which awards the Césars. In 2011, 240 French feature films were produced. The market share of domestic films increased by 4.2 percent compared to 2010, to 41.5 percent. The most successful film production was Olivier Nakaches and Éric Toledano comedy Pretty Best Friends , which reached almost 20 million viewers and thus became the third most successful film in France since 1945 (after Willkommen bei den Sch'tis and Titanic ) . In addition to Pretty Best Friends , three other French productions ( Nothing to declare , Poliezei , Only for staff! ) Reached more than two million, a total of 20 French films more than one million viewers (including The Artist , Les Tuche and two film adaptations by Louis Pergauds Roman War of the Buttons) . 555 short and full-length films and 3309 filmmakers had been proposed for the César by the 4199 member academy. Feature films were taken into account that were shown for a fee for at least seven days in a public cinema in the Paris region between January 1 and December 31, 2011. The votes of 60 percent of the Film Academy members were used to determine the nominees.

Like the directing category, the categories for the best leading actor in 2012 were increased from five to seven nominations. According to Terzian, this should better reflect the wealth of nominated film productions.

The members of the Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma voted on the winners . Similar to the Oscars , a joint meal for the César-nominated filmmakers ("Déjeuner des Nommés") was held on February 4th in the restaurant Le Fouquet’s . One innovation was the “L'Année Cinéma César” - the film productions nominated for the César were shown for two weeks at the Cinéma Le Balzac in Paris on the Champs-Élysées.

Award-winning film productions

Michel Hazanavicius ' The Artist advanced to be the most successful film at the awards ceremony, converting six of his ten nominations into victories. The homage to the American silent film , which had already been rewarded with three Golden Globe Awards , seven British Academy Film Awards and ten Oscar nominations, won the awards for best film, best director, best actress ( Bérénice Bejo ) as well the prices for camera, film music and production design. Three Césars went to Pierre Schoeller's Der Aufsteiger (eleven nominations), which focuses on a French transport minister (played by Olivier Gourmet ) who has to prove himself in the tough everyday life of politicians. The political drama won awards for supporting actor Michel Blanc , the original script and the sound.

When the nominations were announced, Poliezei by director Maïwenn was the favorite for the French film award. The drama with Karin Viard , Marina Foïs and Joeystarr in the leading roles takes on the everyday life of the French youth protection police Brigade de Protection des Mineurs (BPM), which is accompanied by a photographer (played by Maïwenn). This is to write a book on police work on behalf of the Ministry of the Interior. Poliezei received 13 nominations and, in addition to the prizes for the best film and the best director, was also able to count on chances of winning various actor prizes (Karin Viard, Marina Foïs, Joeystarr, Karole Rocher , Nicolas Duvauchelle , Frédéric Pierrot and Naidra Ayadi ). The film won the jury award at its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011 , but was only honored in the categories of best young actress (Naidra Ayadi) and for best editing at the César Awards. Alix Delaporte's film debut Angèle and Tony , which tells of a homeless woman (played by Clotilde Hesme ), who falls in love with a Norman fisherman ( Grégory Gadebois ), also won two Césars in the young actor categories .

Olivier Nakaches and Éric Toledanos Pretty Best Friends (nine nominations), Bertrand Bonello's House of Sin (eight) and Philippe Le Guays For Personal Only! (three). Nakaches and Toledano's successful French box office comedy Pretty Best Friends tells the story of a wealthy, wheelchair-dependent nobleman (played by François Cluzet ) who hires a young migrant ( Omar Sy ) to take care of his household. Sy was the first black actor to be awarded the Leading Actor Award and was able to beat Oscar-nominated Jean Dujardin (The Artist) . The historical drama Haus der Sünde , which was not considered for best film or for the director's award and is set in a Paris brothel at the end of the 19th century, won the César for best costumes. The Spaniard Carmen Maura , in Philippe Le Guays Comedy For staff! a courageous Spanish maid playing in the house of a stiff Parisian stockbroker (portrayed by Fabrice Luchini ) won the Best Supporting Actress award.

Unprized films and awards to Iran

Valérie Donzellis' Life Belongs to Us (six nominations) also belonged to the extended circle of favorites but did not receive an award. Donzelli dedicated himself to a young couple (played by Donzelli and her partner Jérémie Elkaïm ) who were confronted with his child's cancer. The film was France's candidate for the 2012 Oscar abroad , but was not shortlisted. Also no César won in the categories Best Film and Best Director nominated works Le Havre by Aki Kaurismäki (three nominations, Finland candidate on foreign Oscar in 2012) and Father (two nominations), in which director Alain Cavalier and the actor Vincent Lindon two politicians mimes.

When the nominations were announced, the French daily newspapers Le Monde and Le Figaro pointed to the good performance of comedies such as The Artist or Pretty Best Friends , after the genre had often been ignored by the French film academy in the past. After the award ceremony, Le Monde judged that the winners were "a fairly true reflection of the diversity of French cinema in good health" and pointed out the numerous winners from the comedy field.

Black Swan (USA), The King's Speech (Great Britain) and The Woman Who Sings - Incendies (Canada) , which won awards or were nominated at the 2011 Academy Awards, received nominations in the Best Foreign Film category . In addition to The Kid with a Bike by the Belgian pair of brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne and the European Film Award excellent drama Melancholia by Lars von Trier were also responsible for the Academy Awards 2012 nominated entries Drive and Nader and Simin - A Separation ( Golden Globe Award 2012 as best foreign language film). The Iranian contribution won the award.
