Valérie Donzelli (born March 2, 1973 in Épinal ) is a French actress , director and screenwriter .

Life

Donzelli, daughter of an employee in Épinal, grew up in Créteil and Lille . Her grandfather, an Italian, was a sculptor and painter. At 19, she went to Paris and began studying architecture, which she gave up after a short time in favor of acting at the city conservatory. She met the actor Jérémie Elkaïm and they became a couple. The relationship resulted in two children.

After minor roles in short and television films, Donzelli took on her first leading role in the cinema in Sandrine Veysset's Martha… Martha (2001). For her portrayal she was awarded the Prix Michel Simon as best actress. Numerous supporting roles followed, including 2003 in Who Killed Bambi? and In the shade of the woods . For example, she was on television in 2005 in the series Clara Sheller - In Love in Paris as Clara's best friend Jeanne.

As a director, Donzelli first made the short film Il fait beau dans la plus belle ville du monde in 2008 , before making her directorial debut in a feature film the following year with La rein des pommes . She processed the separation from her partner, in which she and Jérémie Elkaïm also played the main roles. She then shot the film drama Life Belongs to Us with Elkaïm , which was released in 2011. Again, the couple processed their own story - their son's cancer; Donzelli and Elkaïm played the parents (in the film "Roméo" and "Juliette"). Life is ours has received numerous film awards, Donzelli was nominated for four Césars , among others . She also worked with Elkaïm in her subsequent films Main dans la main and Marguerite et Julien ; they each wrote the script and Elkaïm took on a leading role.

In 2016, Valérie Donzelli was the jury president of the side series Semaine de la critique, which was held parallel to the Cannes International Film Festival .
