A visit to a doctor who diagnoses that the only problem is that Juliette is almost constantly giving him the breast, she has to give him a rhythm and after he has screamed for a quarter of an hour, distracts him, but only after four hours breastfeed, solves the problem and everything returns to normal. Later, however, Adam vomits violently from time to time, often coughs, but is allowed to attend the day nursery even though, unlike other children, he cannot walk. The parents visit a doctor who eventually notices that Adam has an asymmetrical face. The bronchi are mucous, which would explain the cough; but the doctor worries about the slight swelling of one half of the face. She has a neurologist examine her . This investigation takes place in Marseille , where Juliette started to work. On the recommendation of a friend, have the examination carried out by specialist Dr. Make Fitoussi. The MRI shows that Adam has a brain tumor. The diagnosis comes as a shock to the young couple and their parents are also upset. Juliette and Roméo decide to have Adam operated on in Paris by Prof. Sainte-Rose.

The operation in Paris takes nine hours but goes well. Nevertheless, Prof. Sainte-Rose brings the couple bad news: the tumor was malignant; the treatment must therefore continue, especially since a small part of the tumor could not be surgically removed. First, Juliette and Roméo try to get on with their lives. You go out with friends, but they are increasingly cautious with the couple. Juliette's parents are not always of great help either, as Juliette's mother always fears the worst. In fact, Adam's chemotherapy is not doing as well as it would be desirable. Further studies show that the tumor was a rhabdoid tumor that is particularly malignant. The chances of survival are only ten percent. Adam is transferred to a sterile ward. Juliette and Roméo give up their jobs, sell their apartment, which they can no longer afford, and move into a parental home in the hospital. They visit their son every day and try to maintain their relationship. They lived together like this for more than two years, neglecting their friends and eventually drifting apart. After several attempts to get back together, they finally split up.

Adam is eight years old after all and is in the third grade. He loves math. Prof. Sainte-Rose can announce to the couple that Adam is cured - he now has exactly the same risk of developing cancer as any other person. Juliette and Roméo leave the clinic with Adam and go to the sea. Here they hold Adam in their arms, almost like they used to.

production

Life is ours is an autobiographical film. It is based on the personal experiences of Valérie Donzelli and Jérémie Elkaïm, who were a couple for years, and their son Gabriel, to whom the film is dedicated and who was seriously ill with cancer. Gabriel Elkaïm took on the role of eight-year-old Adam in the film. Donzelli and Elkaïm wrote the script and took on the leading roles, while Donzelli directed. The film was shot with a small camera and largely without additional light. Donzelli also tried to shoot all the scenes with little technical effort and in real rooms, i.e. without a studio atmosphere. Filming locations included the Hôpital Necker Enfants Malades in Paris, the Hôpital de la Timone in Marseille and the Institut Gustave Roussy in Val-de-Marne.

The film premiered on May 12, 2011 at the Cannes International Film Festival and was released in French cinemas on August 31, 2011. From April 26, 2012 it was also shown in German cinemas, and in the same year it was released on DVD.

criticism

The film service found that life belongs to us "despite the subject only in rudimentary form, because as a pop-affine drama it all too forces great emotions and the intense experience of happiness as well as pain." completely bypasses the reality of the thematic experiences of illness and fear [...] ”. Der Spiegel called the film “a real, moving piece of life”.

Cinema compared the film with works by François Truffaut and classics of the Nouvelle Vague because of the "variety of stylistic means, the playful and frequent changes of mood". The film is a "thrilling cinema experience. Conclusion: Life is ours - two lovers triumph over death. Moving and exhilarating! "
