Riad Sattouf
Riad Sattouf (born May 5, 1978 in Paris ) is a French comic book writer and film director . He is best known for the series The Arabs of Tomorrow , in which he tells of his childhood in Libya and Syria, and the film Boys Stay Boys .
Life
Riad Sattouf was born in Paris to a Syrian father and a French mother. He spent his childhood in Libya and Syria until he returned to France at the age of twelve. After graduating from high school in Rennes , he attended a school for applied arts in Nantes and studied animation at the École des Gobelins in Paris.
After the publication of the picture book My Circumcision in 2004, Sattouf was brought to court in France because he used the work to draw a picture of his father that was too negative. Because of this affair, the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo became aware of the young illustrator.
From 2004 to 2014 he drew the weekly comic strip La Vie secrète des jeunes (The secret life of youth) for Charlie Hebdo .
After his film Jacky in the Kingdom of Women flopped in 2014, Sattouf found plenty of time to turn back to drawing. In addition, he had helped friends flee Syria around 2011 and wanted to process these experiences as a comic. To first come to terms with his own story, he began working on The Arab of Tomorrow . The now (as of 2020) four-volume autobiographical series has become one of the most successful contemporary European comic series.
Since 2012 he has shared a studio with the draftsmen Christophe Blain , Mathieu Sapin and Joann Sfar . From 2014 his series Les Cahiers d'Esther appeared in the weekly magazine Nouvel Observateur . The German-language publication of Part 1, Esther's Diaries - My Life as a Ten-Year-old , received the Rudolph Dirks Award in 2017 and the Max and Moritz Prize in 2018 as the best international comic.
