L'Obs (originally France Observateur ; 1964 to 2014 Le Nouvel Observateur ) is a French news magazine .

history

The weekly magazine mainly contains reports on political, social and economic events in France and around the world. It was founded in 1964 by the French philosopher and journalist André Gorz together with the journalist Jean Daniel .

The magazine's predecessor was L'Observateur, founded by Claude Bourdet in 1950 . From 1954 to 1964 the magazine was published under the title France Observateur , until October 23, 2014 as Le Nouvel Observateur , since then L'Obs for short . The sheet has been published by the Claude Perdriel press group since 1964.

The Nouvel Observateur was very popular with Parisian intellectuals for a long time . Founded as a left-wing magazine, it was oriented towards the moderate left at the end of the 1970s. During his tenure, the Nouvel Observateur endorsed parts of François Mitterrand's policies .

In December 2011 the takeover of the online magazine Rue89 was announced.

In 2007, the Nouvel Observateur was considered the second largest French news magazine. According to the Alliance pour les chiffres de la presse et de médias (ACPM), its paid edition was 401,087 copies in 2015, the widespread edition 417,398 copies; This placed the magazine in 20th place among the national French weekly magazines, just ahead of its competitors Le Point (26) and L'Express (29).
