history

Rue89 was founded in May 2007 by Pierre Haski (President of the Rue89 company and Public Relations Director), Laurent Mauriac (General Manager), Pascal Riché (Editor-in-Chief), Arnaud Aubron (Webmaster / Editor) and Michel Levy-Provencal . The editorial office is currently 24, rue de l'Est in the 20th arrondissement.

Pascal Riche chose the name "Rue89" (= street 89) because it should be a place of encounter and discussion and the number 89 to the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989), the French Revolution (1789) and the emergence of the World Wide Web ( 1989) remember. Since May 14, 2007, Rue89 has become more and more popular among users. She reported the absence of Cecilia Sarkozy during the second round of the presidential campaign and spread the news that the weekly Le Journal du Dimanche had withheld information at the last minute. This gave the impression that the French government had put pressure on the press. The French media psychoon Arnaud Lagadere , a close friend of Nicolas Sarkozy, was suspected .

In September 2007, the site revealed that consultant Alexis Debat , primarily employed by ABC News and The National Interest , had had several conversations, including a. with Alan Greenspan , Bill Clinton , Michael Bloomberg , Bill Gates and Kofi Annan .

On June 27, 2008, Rue89 announced the increase in its equity capital of EUR 1.1 million, which means that the founders will remain majority shareholders with 51.3% of the company's capital. In December 2009, Rue89 received funding of 249,000 euros from the media development company, which is not under the Prime Minister's responsibility.

On October 1st, 2008, Rue89 put the Eco89 website on the web, which mainly deals with economic issues. There is also an issue of the magazine for the Canadian province of Québec as well as two foreign-language editions, one in Spanish and one in Japanese.

Since June 2010 there has been a monthly printed edition with the most important articles published on the Internet in the previous month. The print edition was discontinued in 2012.

In December 2011 the takeover by the Nouvel Observateur was announced.
