Nicolas Winding Refn [ neɡolas vendeŋ ˈʁɛfn̩ ] ( Danish ) (born September 29, 1970 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish film director and screenwriter .

Live and act

The son of the Danish cinematographer Vibeke Winding and the film director and editor Anders Refn grew up in the USA from the age of eight . After graduating from high school in Denmark, he attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York . He did not finish his training there. In 1996, Winding Refn made his debut as a director and screenwriter with the film Pusher . The leading roles were played by Kim Bodnia and the then relatively unknown Mads Mikkelsen , for whom it was the first leading role. Three years later, Winding Refn started producing his second film, Bleeder . Bodnia and Mikkelsen were there too.

In 2003, Winding Refn made his first English-language film, Fear X. The film meant the director's financial ruin due to its failure. As a result, in 2004 he said he was forced to shoot Pusher II and Pusher 3 within a year. Pusher II , the continuation of his successful debut, has been nominated for the most important Danish film awards Bodil and Robert . In 2005 the trilogy came to an end with Pusher 3 , and in 2007 Marple: Nemesis, a television film that was produced in Great Britain, was made.

In 2008, Nicolas Winding Refn dedicated the film Bronson to the British felon and later outsider artist Charlie Bronson . This film was the first collaboration with film editor Matthew Newman . This connection continues to this day (as of July 2019). In 2010, the Viking epic Walhalla Rising, again starring Mads Mikkelsen, followed . For the American thriller Drive (2011), in which Ryan Gosling mimes a nameless Hollywood stuntman and occasional getaway driver during robberies, Winding Refn won the Director's Award at the Cannes International Film Festival. This film is the exception in Winding Refn's previous oeuvre as he did not write the script.

In 2012 he directed the thriller Only God Forgives in Bangkok . The film was nominated for a Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2013. He won a third nomination for the main prize in Cannes in 2016 at the 66th film festival for The Neon Demon . In 2017 it became public that the director would shoot a ten-part crime series entitled Too Old to Die Young about the criminal underworld of Los Angeles for Amazon . The series, which Refn wrote together with comic author and illustrator Ed Brubaker , was published on June 14, 2019 on the Prime Video streaming portal . On July 27, 2019, it was announced that the series would be discontinued after only one season.

In 2016, Refn was invited as one of 683 personalities by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a new member.

Nicolas Winding Refn also worked as a commercial film director. He won a Danish Advertising Award for his TV spots for Tuborg . In 2017 he called together with some partners, u. a. the Harvard Film Archive and MUBI , the streaming service byNWR.com . The offer, which focuses on off-site films, is free. Winding Refn says it finances film restoration for byNWR.com through its work for the advertising industry.

Winding Refn is married to Danish actress Liv Corfixen , who is three years his junior and who plays supporting roles in some of his films. He is color-blind and, according to his own statements, cannot see any medium hues. The handicap has a significant influence on the visual design of his films, as he often works with hard contrasts.
