action
Twelve year old Cyril Catoul was placed in a children's home by his father Guy for a month. After the time has elapsed, the boy tries to reach his father by phone, but suddenly the number is no longer assigned. The educators in the home try in vain to make it clear to him that his father has moved. They don't know where he is and Cyril doesn't believe them.
At school he escapes and goes to the apartment block where he lived with his father. Nobody answers his doorbell, only a neighbor appears when he knocks on the apartment door and chases him away. The caretakers of the home also arrive, they suspect Cyril from the old address of the father. On his flight from the educators, Cyril runs into a doctor's office and clings to a patient there - the young hairdresser Samantha. Shortly afterwards, Cyril and the educators are allowed to enter his former apartment, which is empty. Only now does he believe that his father is no longer there. In addition to the loss of his father, he is particularly pained that his bicycle has also disappeared.
Some time later, Samantha visits Cyril at the home. She brings him his bike, which she bought from another boy in the area. Cyril suspects that the boy stole his bike. He asks Samantha if he can visit her, and Samantha takes Cyril in at the weekend with the permission of the home management. He likes her, but also has his stubborn and rebellious phases that Samantha finds it difficult to face. Cyril finds it particularly difficult to bear the closeness to her boyfriend Gilles.
In the near future Cyril will be driving around the area on his bike and asking about his father. So he learns that Guy has not only sold his bike, but also his motorcycle. One day Samantha picks him up from the home and they both drive to his father Guy. Samantha found the address through the police. You meet him in a bar where he is responsible for the kitchen. He promises Cyril to call him, but makes it clear to Samantha in a conversation that he cannot take care of his son. He is struggling to get a grip on his own life and would not make it with his son. Samantha gets him to tell Cyril that he will not see him again and that he will never call him. On the way home, Cyril bursts into tears and Samantha comforts him.
Cyril is now moving in with Samantha. One day he wants to play soccer with other children when his bike is stolen from him. He runs after the boy and can catch him. It comes to a duel, which in turn other boys watch for the young Wes. When Cyril wins, he gets his bike back. Wes accompanies him on the way home, invites him to his place, where they both play Playstation , gives him food and drink and takes him to a bicycle workshop, where a tire on Cyril's bike is being repaired. Wes also pays for the repairs and offers Cyril that they could do something together. He just shouldn't believe the rumors that are circulating about him.
Since Samantha tries several times to reach Cyril by phone, Wes lets him turn off the cell phone. Samantha and Gilles eventually pick up Cyril on the street at night. Both have been looking for him for hours and Samantha is horrified to see Cyril with the criminal Wes. Cyril reacts dismissively. Samantha accuses him of not answering the phone, whereupon he says he didn't hear the ringing. Gilles calls him a liar and Cyril returns that claim. When he refuses to apologize to Gilles, Gilles presents Samantha with the choice of living with him or Cyril in the future. Samantha chooses Cyril and Gilles leaves.
Even though Cyril Samantha promises to avoid Wes, the two continue to meet. Wes recruits Cyril for a planned heist on the newsagents Surlet. Cyril is supposed to knock the man down after the shop closes and take the money from him. Cyril agrees, he wants to please Wes. He does not want any of the money he has stolen. On the planned evening, Samantha intuitively does not let Cyril go. Cyril reacts angrily, refuses to go to the cinema with the boy next door Mourad and tries to jump out of the window. When Samantha prevents him, he stabs her and injures her arm. Then he flees on his bike. In shock, Samantha informs the home's educators. A little later, as practiced with Wes, Cyril knocks down the newsagents and takes the money. To his surprise, however, Surlet has locked the shop with his son Martin. Cyril can also knock Martin down, but is recognized. When Wes, who is waiting in the nearby car, realizes that his plan has gone wrong, he does not accept the looted money and exposes Cyril on the street. Cyril goes to his father to give him the money, but he sends his son away. Finally, Cyril drives back to Samantha. She says the police are already looking for him. He apologizes to her and asks her to stay with her. She agrees.
The robbery leads to a mediation process in which the shopkeeper Surlet takes part. Samantha will pay for the hospital and downtime costs. Cyril officially apologizes to Surlet, who accepts the apology. Some time later, Samantha and Cyril go on a bike ride and decide to have a barbecue with Mourad and his family in the evening. Cyril is buying charcoal at a gas station when he meets Surlet and Martin. Martin hatefully begins to pursue Cyril and Surlet cannot stop him. Cyril takes refuge in the forest and climbs a tree. Martin throws stones at him and hits him. Cyril falls a few meters and remains motionless. Martin is shaken and gets his father. When they both want to call the ambulance, Cyril comes to. He has a concussion but doesn't want Surlet to get an ambulance. He goes back to his bike, shouldering the charcoal, and drives away.

For the film service , Der Junge mit dem Fahrrad (The Boy with a Bicycle) was "a quiet, closely observed and artfully condensed social drama that is artfully condensed down to the last detail, which nonetheless deals with the experience of unconditional love and rewards with the prospect of happiness."
“Fairytale social drama that gives us back our belief in what is good,” said Cinema , and Der Spiegel called the film “an exciting story told in clear images that hits the soul and doesn't want to ask too many questions.” Among other things, remain open why Samantha loved the boy unconditionally and what had happened to Cyril's mother.
