action

1964: The young Madeleine works as a saleswoman in a shoe shop. She secretly lets go of a pair of pumps and tries on the shoes on the street after the shop closes. When she is conspicuously walking down the street with them, she is mistaken for a prostitute and does not clear up the misunderstanding when she hears the amount that the suitor would pay. In the near future, she received several gentlemen's visits until she met the Czech doctor Jaromil Passer. He falls in love with her and after a while asks her to marry her and come to Prague with him . At first Madeleine refuses, but then follows him. The years go by and they both have a daughter, Véra. Jaromil cheats, but Madeleine is ready to forgive him for his infidelities if he only keeps coming back to her. One day, Prague is occupied by the Russians . Madeleine wants to flee with Jaromil and Véra across the border to France, but Jaromil is with a lover and doesn't believe her. Madeleine goes alone.

1978: Madeleine and Véra live again in France. Madeleine remarried and her husband, François Gouriot, who works as a gendarme , loves Véra like his own child. Madeleine learns that Jaromil is back in town. He still loves her and she plans to flee with Véra and Jaromil. When François unexpectedly comes home, Madeleine falls for him immediately and Jaromil leaves.

1997: Véra meets the musician and veterinarian Henderson in a bar. She is on a reading tour with the teacher and author Clément, with whom she has no affair, but who haunts her with his jealousy. Véra accompanies Henderson to his apartment and tries to seduce him, but he confesses to her that he is gay . Nevertheless, he later satisfies her orally in a toilet while Clément gives a reading a few rooms down the road. Clément suspects what is going on and makes a scene in front of everyone. Meanwhile, Madeleine is cheating again with Jaromil, who is in town. He also seeks out François to get him to leave Madeleine. François refuses. While strolling through town with Véra, Jaromil manages to buy his daughter a sari . He makes his way to the hotel where Madeleine is waiting for him. He overlooks tree cutting work and is hit on the head by a falling branch. He walks on, but collapses in front of Madeleine's hotel. A little later he dies in the hotel from his severe head injuries.

1998: Véra meets Henderson again at a club. She wants to resume the relationship with him, even if he has a boyfriend. He confesses to her that he believes he has HIV .

2001: Véra flies to New York City on September 11 , but her plane is diverted to Montréal due to the bombings . Henderson drives to her with his companion Mathieu. Véra admits that despite his illness, he wants a child. She doesn't care if she gets infected, the thought of not being loved by him torments her, much more. Although Henderson initially refuses, they both spend the night with Mathieu and sleep together. Véra later steals all of Henderson's medicines and secretly swallows them in the hotel bar. Unnoticed by those present, she collapses and dies of the overdose.

2007: It is Madeleine's birthday and also invites Clément to come to Reims . She has been depressed since Véra's death , especially since she realized that she hardly loves François. Clément offers to get out of the birthday party and they both go to town. Madeleine sees her former home, where she slept with Jaromil, and she puts on the shoes that she once stole. She also sees again the hotel where she later met Jaromil. Later she returns to François, disaffected.
