action

The 27-year-old Angèle meets the fisherman Tony through a newspaper advertisement. The withdrawn , thoughtful man lives on the rough Normandy coast, where he still lives with his mother Myriam after his father's death. She sells the fish he catches in the sea with his cutter. Tony's brother Ryan, on the other hand, is obsessed with the idea of finding his father, who has drowned in the sea, even after six months with the help of divers. Both are also active to protest against the government's high catch quotas, which is why Ryan in particular repeatedly clashes with the police. Tony quickly realizes that the beautiful city dweller Angèle does not belong on the coast and that he is far too old for her. He sends her away, but first offers her to help with the sale of the family business.

Tony doesn't know Angèle's past: she was in prison for two years for being held responsible for the death of her husband, whom she describes as an accident. She is currently on parole. Her son Yohan is nine years old and has not seen his mother for two years. He grows up with Angèles in-laws, who would like to have custody of Yohan. Angèle, however, hopes to regain contact and access to her son, which requires a stable family situation. She hides all of this from Tony when she returns to him. She wants to work with the family and because she lives in a home in town, she wants to live with Tony and his mother. At first Angèle tries to seduce Tony brusquely, but he rejects her. Both withdraw to the colleague level. Angèle is learning slowly, she has no idea about fish, but Tony remains persistent and, in the end, Angèle helps out in the day-to-day sales business. She receives an employment contract from Tony and soon Tony and Angèle get closer. Angèle is also slowly making contact with the villagers. She soon dreams of marriage and tells her probation officer that she will marry Tony. This would increase their chances of being awarded Yohan in a custody battle.

Myriam is not very enthusiastic about the prospect of seeing her son with a woman who is actually a stranger to her. He says that if Angèle had to go, he would also go. The next day, Angèle notices that her belongings have been ransacked. She confronts Myriam, who admits she now knows about the suspended sentence and the child. Angèle wants to pack her things and go, but Myriam shows her that she should stay. During a conversation with the family judge who will decide on Yohan's future, Angèle admits a little later that she invented the wedding. Tony is just her employer. A little later he, in turn, confesses to her that he wants to live with her, and Angèle is happy. A little later she watches Yohan in a playground and takes her son with her. She shows him Tony's house and the animals and introduces him to Tony a little later. He's surprised, he didn't know anything about the child. He asks Yohan where he lives and why he is not living with his mother, and finds out that Angèle was in prison. He is disappointed that Angèle has withheld the truth from him, but realizes how important her son is to her. They both decide to actually get married.

At the custody hearing in court a few days later, Angèle interrupted the interviews shortly after they began. She knows that it is too early for Yohan to decide on her as a mother, he has not been able to see her for too long. Shortly afterwards, Tony and Angèle's wedding takes place. Angèle's father-in-law appears with Yohan in front of the town hall. He decided of his own free will to come to his mother. The father-in-law, in turn, brought him to her without the knowledge of his wife, who is critical of Angèle. Yohan wants to know if it hurts when a cancer pinches. Tony and Angèle then leave the party in front of the town hall and drive to the coast. They look for crabs in the mud and Yohan can answer his question himself. For the first time, mother and son hug each other again and Angèle is happy.

criticism

The film-dienst wrote that the film "in clear, calm images and close to its strong actors [...] a moving story about the power of love [unfolds]" and is also romantic, but never banal, which is mainly due to the “well-measured, concentrated use of the cinematic narrative” succeeds. The Spiegel called Angèle and Tony a “unadorned love story that doesn't allow itself any arabesques, but rather steers towards its goal just as determinedly as its heroine.” The film dispenses with superfluous words and the director instead uses “looks and gestures, physical presence and ultimately scenes mutual silence in which the bodies find each other in a mésalliance cordiale . ”For Cinema it was a“ breathtaking film […] that develops its story in calm, unsentimental images ”and a“ grandiose debut film that lingers for a long time ”.
