history

A Roman fort, Grannona , may have stood here in the 4th and 5th centuries . It was part of the fortress chain of the Gallic part of the so-called Saxon coast and perhaps served as the headquarters of one of the section commanders , the Dux tractus Armoricani et Nervicani . Port-en-Bassin was first mentioned in 1035/1036 as Portu (for Latin Portus - "port"). Hupain is mentioned for the first time in the thirteenth century . In 1824 the municipality of Huppain was combined with the neighboring municipalities of Neuville-sur-Port and Villiers-sur-Port .

On June 8, 1944, the place was liberated as part of Operation Overlord . In 1972 the municipalities of Port-en-Bessin and Huppain were merged.
