history

The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the departments as part of what was then the "District de Bayeux". With the creation of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800, the canton was redesigned as part of what was then the arrondissement of Bayeux.

Until the nationwide reorganization of the French cantons in March 2015, the canton of Bayeux included the 16 municipalities of Agy , Arganchy , Barbeville , Bayeux , Cottun , Cussy , Guéron , Monceaux-en-Bessin , Nonant , Ranchy , Saint-Loup-Hors , and Saint-Martin -des-Entrées , Saint-Vigor-le-Grand , Subles , Sully and Vaucelles . Before 2015 it had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 1403.

The old canton corresponded to an area of ​​80.90 km ² and bordered the canton Ryes to the north, the cantons Creully and Tilly-sur-Seulles in the arrondissement of Caen to the east, the canton Balleroy to the south and the canton Trévières to the west .
