life and work

In his films, Bertrand Bonello often devotes himself to the topics of sexuality and prostitution . He caused a sensation with the film The Pornographer , because he had uncensored sex scenes by real porn actors played in it. The documentary closeness was widely criticized as being pornographic , but it was also praised. In this context, Bonello has been placed in a number of French filmmakers (e.g. Virginie Despentes , Catherine Breillat ) who strive to expose the mundane nature of sexuality. The film won the 2001 FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival .

His film Tiresia was nominated for a Palme d'Or at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival .

His film House of Sin , which premiered in the 2011 Cannes Film Festival competition , also attracted attention, once again through the preoccupation with the subject of prostitution . He expressed his interest in this topic in an interview as follows:

“Not necessarily in the sense that I would understand prostitution - it's just too complicated for that, and if some say prostitution is fantastic and others say it is terrible, then that is too simple. There is a great fascination with the nature of the prostitute; so many paintings portray prostitutes; the cinema has existed since 1895, five years later the first film with a prostitute is made; she is a strong figure for fiction. You can feel very close to her, you pay, she is there, but at the same time there is this secret: How does it work? "( Bertrand Bonello : Interview in the daily newspaper on April 19, 2012, accessed on April 24, 2012.)

For the 71st Cannes Film Festival in May 2018 he was selected as jury president for the short film competition and the side series Cinéfondation . In the same year he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.

Bertrand Bonello lives in Paris and Montreal .
