Catherine Breillat
Catherine Breillat (born July 13, 1948 in Bressuire ) is a French director , writer and screenwriter .
Life
Catherine Breillat was already enthusiastic about cinema as a child. When she was 12, she decided to become a writer and director. At the age of 17 she moved out of her strict Catholic home and went to Paris. There, at the age of 17, she wrote her first novel The Easy Man (Orig. L'homme facile , 1968), which is classified as not suitable for minors. Since then, she has been at the center of a debate about the sexual identity of women and is confronted with accusations of pornography . Her books and films are often characterized by an explicit representation of sexuality, which often provokes controversial discussions. As a young woman, Catherine Breillat also appeared in a few smaller roles in films, including a. with her sister, the actress Marie-Hélène Breillat , in Last Tango in Paris by Bernardo Bertolucci (1972). Catherine Breillat is best known as a writer filmmaker. Most of her films are based on a novel written by herself or an adaptation of her novel .
Breillat made her directorial debut in 1976 with the film adaptation of her fourth novel Le Soupirail under the title Ein Mädchen (Une vraie jeune fille) . The film was also declared not suitable for minors. Her second film, Tapage nocturne, from 1979, was also censored. As a result, Breillat initially had difficulties getting her films financed. She therefore worked as a screenwriter from the late 1970s to the 1990s, and very successfully. After the success of her third film Lolita '90 (36 fillette) , she was able to make other films from the late 1980s.
Breillat became internationally known as a director in 1999 with her film Romance XXX (Romance) at the Rotterdam International Film Festival - the festival dedicated a retrospective to her. As part of the reassessment of her artistic work, her first film A Girl was also released.
In 2004, Catherine Breillat suffered a stroke that resulted in a five-month hospital stay. In addition to her work as a filmmaker, she teaches screenwriting at various institutes.
