The French feature film Brief Crossing (Brève traversée) by Catherine Breillat was founded in 2001 by the television channel Arte produced. The story told in dreary pictures is kept simple. On the ferry across the English Channel for a language stay in England, a 16-year-old virgin meets a significantly older, married English woman. They spend a night together. For the first time, Breillat did not deal with the sexual challenges of a female protagonist, but those of a man. The station's specifications limited the recordings to 20 days of shooting and the budget to one million euros; the broadcaster also requested the use of a digital video camera. Because Breillat didn't like the digital format at all, 16mm material was used.
Reviews
It was positive that the film would have turned out to be a striking short film with a running time of fifteen minutes less. In this way, however, a feature-length film was created that "is just a bit long, but has a captivating charm." The actors are completely unknown, and that is precisely what makes them perfect. After the Cahiers du cinéma , Breillat pursues its usual themes without inspiration and inadequate form. She stands between her belief in a discourse and the search for raw sensuality. The result is usually theatrical and not a bit scandalous.
