A Girl is a 1976 film directed by Catherine Breillat . It is based on her own novel Le Soupirail .

content

Alice Bonnard is 16 and discovers her own burgeoning sexuality with interest, but also with alienation. As she explores them, she also develops other interests and a new interpretation of her environment. She goes to boarding school and returns to the French provinces during the holidays. Here Alice is caught between her vulgar father and her hysterical mother. Both of them have nothing else to do than throw themselves into their work during the day and spend the evenings in front of the television. Increasingly, Alice is disgusted with this life.

Suddenly everything in their environment also seems to have something to do with sexuality. Vomiting becomes a sensual experience and washing-up liquid bottles, fingers coated with mustard and your bicycle saddle become masturbation aids. Alice also enjoys being a bit exhibitionistic. Her feelings are mixed up even more when she meets the unskilled worker Pierre-Evariste Renard in her father's sawmill. First she watches him from a distance, then she tries to seduce him. At first she was only successful in her daydreams, but little by little he too showed interest. When he wants to visit her one night, however, it comes to a catastrophe. He gets caught in an animal trap set up by Alice's father in the corn fields and dies.

Remarks

Catherine Breillat filmed her own novel Le Soupirail with A Girl . The film, which was completed in 1976, only had its world premiere on February 4, 1999 at the Rotterdam International Film Festival . Until then, a performance was forbidden due to the revealing representation of sexuality (spread labia, urination scenes, masturbation).

Leading actress Charlotte Alexandra played her second role after Walerian Borowczyk's Immoral Stories , which in turn is very revealing. Hiram Keller was best known for his role as Ascilto in Fellini's Satyricon . Catherine Breillat not only wrote the template and script, she also directed for the first time and was responsible for the production design and lyrics.

In 2013 the film was first released on DVD in Germany under the title A Really Young Girl .
