Walerian Borowczyk

Walerian Borowczyk (born September 2, 1923 in Kwilcz , † February 3, 2006 in Paris ) was a Polish director . He lived in France since 1959.

Life

Walerian Borowczyk initially trained as a painter and graphic artist. In 1953 he was able to win the Polish National Prize here . He made his first contact with film as a film poster designer. In the late 1950s, he started drawing short cartoons. At the beginning of the 1960s, he left Poland for France , where he became one of the country's most prominent animators. After a series of short films that have received multiple awards (including Dom , Renaissance , Les jeux des Anges , Le dictionnaire de Joachim ), he shot his first real feature film in 1968, Goto, Insel der Liebe ( Goto, l'île d'amour , 1969). Even in this film, in which Pierre Brasseur played the leading role, he laid the foundation for the films with which he became known: eroticism.

He finally achieved his breakthrough with Immoral Stories ( Contes immoraux , 1974). Some scenes in the film earned him the reputation of creating almost pornographic works. In addition, the very young - or at least young-looking - actresses like Charlotte Alexandra and Lise Danvers were in discussion. In the film, which consists of four episodes of varying quality, Paloma Picasso , daughter of Pablo Picasso , also had her only appearance in the film as Elisabeth Báthory . With La Bête - The Beast ( La Bête , 1975) and Immoral Novices ( Interno di un convento , 1978) he was able to record further successes. After Lulu in 1980, Borowczyk's career went downhill. With little success and without the ease of his earlier work, there was only one well-known film with Emmanuelle 5 (1987). His last work was an episode of the television series Erotisches zur Nacht ( Série rose ) in 1990 . Borowczyk was also a screenwriter for many of his films, and for some he was also a cameraman , film editor and producer .

For the film Blanche (1972) Borowczyk won the grand prize in the “International Forum of Young Films” at the 1972 Berlinale . In 1968 he had already won a Silver Bear there for the animated film Rosalie , which received a special mention at the Locarno Film Festival . For the Polish film The Story of a Sin ( Dzieje grzechu , 1975) he was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival . Docteur Jekyll et les femmes brought him a prize at the International Film Festival of Catalonia, Théâtre de M. et Mme. Kabal the Interfilm Prize at the Mannheim-Heidelberg Film Festival . He received his first nomination for a film award in 1960 for one of his early animated films, Dom (1958).
