Hand flame cartridge DM 34

The DM 34 hand flame cartridge is a weapon that was used by the German Armed Forces from 1965 to 2001 . Hand-held flame cartridges create a dazzling and burning effect, their incendiary charge flares up in a flash after impact and develops intense heat and smoke.

General

Practice hand flame cartridge DM38 "caliber 35 mm, total length 445 mm, mass 625 g"
Ammunition box for hand-held flame cartridges (note the earlier common spelling of ß in uppercase letters as "SZ")

Manufactured by Buck Chemisch-Technische Werke GmbH, Bad Reichenhall , it is used primarily in local combat and in the fight for expanded positions or to combat dismounted (on foot) infantry , in some cases also in combat against tanks or vehicles. When used against armored vehicles, they are blinded and are incapable of fighting; under very favorable conditions they catch fire.

The hand-held flame cartridge has a range of up to 90 meters and consists of a yellow olive cartridge case and a fawn- colored trigger mechanism that are firmly connected to each other. The writing on the sharp cartridge is strawberry red.

The Bundeswehr also had a training cartridge. This corresponds to the original in shape and weight, but differs in the light blue marking of the cartridge with fawn-brown inscription and contains a display body with lime filling to detect a hit.

Both cartridges can only be used once.

function

After pulling the trigger , the fire body made of white phosphorus is ejected without delay and with high pressure. If it hits a hard object after a flight distance of at least 8 m, it bursts and releases the combustible material or it is ignited after 1.3 to 2.5 s by a decomposition rate, this then corresponds to a flight distance of 50 to 90 m. The fire material is distributed over an area approx. 15 m wide and 50 m long and burns at 1300 ° C.
