Marco Bellocchio (born November 9, 1939 in Bobbio , Piacenza Province ) is an Italian director and screenwriter .

Life

After attending the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in 1959, Bellocchio moved to London to continue studying at the Slade School of Fine Arts . He took over the first directorial work in the mid-1960s. His first film was I pugni nella tasca (translated as fists in pockets ), which was awarded the “Silver Sails” at the Locarno Film Festival in 1965 . He then directed part of the episode film Liebe und Zorn (1969), the other parts were directed by Bernardo Bertolucci , Jean-Luc Godard , Carlo Lizzani and Pier Paolo Pasolini . For this work he was nominated for the Golden Bear in Berlin in 1969.

The film Teufel im Leib (1986) with Maruschka Detmers , for which he also wrote the screenplay, became a scandal across Europe because of the revealing love scenes. He won the Silver Bear at the 1991 Berlinale for directing the film The Conviction and was nominated for the Golden Bear . For the film The Prince of Homburg (1997) he was nominated for the Palme d'Or , the Prize of the Festival Internacional de Cinema de Catalunya and the Chicago International Film Festival Award . He was nominated for the Palme d'Or for the film L'ora di religione (2002) and won a special prize at the Cannes International Film Festival . The following year he received the European FIPRESCI Prize for his film Buongiorno, notte - The Aldo Moro Case . In 2007 Bellocchio was appointed to the competition jury at the 60th Cannes Film Festival . Two years later he received an invitation for Vincere to compete at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival . In the feature film he takes on the fate of a son of Benito Mussolini who has been kept secret .

Bellocchio is considered to be one of the most anti-conformist Italian directors, who with courage, decisiveness and precision translates his ideas into a film language that is brought closer to the audience on contemporary political issues as well as in such human relationships. The 68th International Film Festival of Venice in 2011 he was awarded the Honorary Award for Lifetime Achievement awarded. A year later he was invited for the third time in the competition of the Italian A-Festival for Bella Addormentata . The drama is an ensemble film with, among others, Toni Servillo , Isabelle Huppert and Alba Rohrwacher , which is set against the background of the death of the Italian coma patient Eluana Englaro (1970–2009).

In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
