Eluana Jolanda Giulia Englaro (born November 25, 1970 in Lecco , † February 9, 2009 in Udine ) was an Italian coma patient who fell into a coma in 1992 after an accident and died in 2009 after 17 years in a vegetative state .

Eluana Englaro was 21 years old when she got off the road with her car on January 18, 1992 near black ice and hit a wall head-on. After the accident, she fell into a coma. Two years later, doctors said her condition was irreversible. Since then, her father fought for his daughter's right to die. A court in Milan found him right. The Constitutional Court in Rome upheld this decision in November 2008.

On February 6, 2009, the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi tried with an emergency ordinance to prevent the end of the life support measures for Eluana Englaro, which was confirmed by the court. However, President Giorgio Napolitano said he would not sign the document due to constitutional concerns. Her family then authorized the doctors to reduce artificial feeding so that it would soon be stopped completely. Eluana Englaro died on February 9, 2009.

Against the backdrop of Englaro's death, the Italian film director Marco Bellocchio set his ensemble film Bella Addormentata with Toni Servillo , Isabelle Huppert and Alba Rohrwacher in 2012 .
