Il Traditore - As a key witness against the Cosa Nostra (original title: Il traditore ; alternative title: Der Verräter ) is a film drama by Marco Bellocchio about the mafioso Tommaso "Don Masino" Buscetta , the first high-ranking mafia boss of the Sicilian Cosa Nostra as a key witness for the government authorities has been.
The film premiered on May 23, 2019 at the Cannes International Film Festival and opened in Italian cinemas on the same day. The film was originally due to open in German cinemas on April 23, 2020 through Pandora Film Verleih, but the film launch was postponed to August 13 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

During the early 1980s a war raged inside the Sicilian Cosa Nostra between the rising mafia clan of the Corleonesi and the clans from Palermo . The high-ranking mafia boss Tommaso Buscetta goes into hiding in Brazil , while old bills are settled in Italy and Buscetta's allies and relatives are systematically murdered. Detected, arrested and extradited to Italy by the Brazilian police, the hitherto loyal follower Buscetta makes the decision to break the vow of silence with the examining magistrate Giovanni Falcone that he took when he joined the Sicilian Cosa Nostra. His testimony helps convict hundreds of members of the Cosa Nostra in Italy and the United States during the so-called Maxi Trial in the 1980s.
