Bilitis is a film by British photographer David Hamilton based on poems by Pierre Louÿs .
content
Seventeen-year-old boarding school student Bilitis falls in love with the photographer Lucas just before the summer holidays, which she is spending with her married friend Melissa. However, she does not dare to take the first step. At Melissa, she witnesses her husband Pierre forcing her into sexual intercourse . The two young girls flee into a short lesbian romance, which Melissa later ends. Bilitis realizes that it's not her, but Melissa needs the photographer Lucas, and so Bilitis returns to boarding school without having found her true love.
Remarks
Bilitis is the first film from photographer David Hamilton, who became known as a master of Lolita photography. He also made photographic use of erotic images of young girls in his films. Like Hamilton himself, the male hero of the story is a photographer.
Unlike most of his subsequent films, Bilitis is a film about puberty and growing up.
Catherine Breillat , who herself became known as a writer and director of similar material, played a key role in the script . Breillat took the book of poems Lieder der Bilitis (Chansons de Bilitis) , published by Pierre Louÿs in 1894 as an alleged translation of ancient poetry of a second Sappho , but composed by Louÿs himself, as a template and relocated the film plot to the present. The name Daughters of Bilitis, the first lesbian organization founded in 1955 in San Francisco , also refers to this volume of poetry .
Francis Lai's film music was a great success in Germany.

Reviews
"Exquisitely photographed, in parts on the verge of kitsch, a" love story "in the style of corresponding men's magazines."
"Tastefully photographed soft sex film, whose exterior chic does not hide the weaknesses of its plot."
