Omar - A Justice Scandal is a 2011 Franco-Moroccan drama directed by Roshdy Zem . The film is about a true case.

action

The gardener Omar Raddad, originally from Morocco , was arrested in Toulon in 1991 . He is charged with murdering the wealthy Ghislaine Marchal in the basement of her villa. Omar had smaller gambling debts and his employer Marchal therefore occasionally asked for financial advances. The police believe that he could not ask for money from her on the day of the incident, a Sunday, and therefore stabbed her to death. The only evidence of Omar's guilt is a grammatically incorrect beginning of the sentence “Omar m'a tuer” (for example: “Omar killed me”), which the dying Ghislaine Marchal allegedly wrote with her blood on the cellar door before she succumbed to her injuries.

Omar protests his innocence and in fact, one day after Marchal's murder, there are no signs of battle or injuries on his body, his clothes have no blood stains and no traces of Ghislaine Marchal's property can be found. On the day of the crime, he was verifiably working in another woman's garden and during a break on the phone with his wife, who was in Toulon. When the coroners also find out that Ghislaine Marchal only died on Monday, Omar's innocence seems proven, as he was demonstrably in Toulon on Monday. However, investigators claim that it was a simple spelling mistake by all three reviewers, and date the time of death back to Sunday. It is not possible to examine the body again, as it was released for cremation surprisingly early.

Although the trial made it clear that there was no evidence of Omar's guilt, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison in 1994. The verdict caused outrage, including the writer Pierre-Emmanuel Vaugrenard, who has long been committed to human rights and is now starting to work on a book about Omar's case. He seeks witnesses and acquaintances of Omar. It becomes clear that statements were withheld, for example a worker saw an unknown man ring the doorbell of Ghislaine Marchal on the day of the crime. In self-experiments, Vaugrenard tests alleged courses of action that turn out to be impossible, and tries in vain to write the sentence “Omar m'a tuer” on a door in the dark as Ghislaine Marchal is said to have succeeded. He publishes his findings, which propagate Omar's innocence. However, it was not until 1998 that Omar was released from prison under an amnesty. He and his lawyer try in vain to prove his innocence. In the meantime, foreign DNA that does not come from Omar has been found in Ghislaine Marchal's blood. Omar appeals, but the appeal of the jury is rejected by the Court of Cassation. The court refuses to compare the foreign DNA with data sets in the national database of France.

production

Omar - A judicial scandal based on the true case of Omar Raddad. The script was based on his book Pourquoi moi? and Jean-Marie Rouart's Omar: La construction d'un coupable . Rouart, then head of literature at Figaro , inspired the character of Pierre-Emmanuel Vaugrenard, who is portrayed in the film by Denis Podalydès.

It was the second film after Mauvaise foi that Roschdy Zem directed. Originally, the film was supposed to be made by Rachid Bouchareb , with Zem supposed to play the leading role.

In France, Omar - A Justice Scandal hit theaters on June 22, 2011, where it was seen by over 570,000 viewers. In Germany, the film was shown for the first time on BR on September 24, 2014 .

criticism
