The 16th Césars award ceremony took place on March 9, 1991 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris . The actress Sophia Loren was the president of the awards ceremony, and she also received an honorary award. The award ceremony, moderated by Richard Bohringer , Guy Marchand , Smaïn , Tchéky Karyo and Eve Ruggieri , was broadcast by the public television broadcaster Antenne 2, now France 2 .

The big winner of the evening was Jean-Paul Rappeneau's Cyrano von Bergerac . With a total of 13 nominations, the film was awarded the César in ten categories, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Cinematography. Gérard Depardieu was able to assert himself with the title role as best leading actor against well-known actors such as Daniel Auteuil , Fabrice Luchini , Michel Piccoli , Jean Rochefort and Michel Serrault .
