Férid Boughedir ( Arabic فريد بوغدير, DMG Farīd Būġadīr ; * 1944 in Hammam-Lif ) is a Tunisian film director , film producer and screenwriter . Boughedir is one of the most famous film critics and historians of African and Arab cinema and also works as a journalist and book author. His film Halfaouine - Time of Dreams is still one of the most famous films in Tunisian cinema worldwide and was awarded the Tanit d'Or at the Carthage Film Festival in Tunisia in 1990 .

Life and education

Boughedir comes from a literary family. His grandfather Ali was a bookseller in the medina of Tunis , he is one of five children of the journalist, writer and cultural worker Taoufik Boughedir and now lives and works in Tunis. As a young man he joined the Film Club and the Tunisian Federation of Amateur Filmmakers (FTCA) in Tunis. He graduated from the University of Paris III and received his PhD from the University of Paris-Nanterre in 1986. Since 1971 he has worked for Jeune Afrique as a journalist and teaches at the University of Tunis . Boughedir is a member of the Tunisian Academy of Science, Literature and Art and was assistant to Alain Robbe-Grillet and Fernando Arrabal . He became known for his publications as a film critic and author of numerous articles and books on the history of African and Arab cinema. In 2017, Middle East magazine listed him as one of the 50 most influential Arabs alongside Tunisians Lina Ben Mhenni and Wafa Makhlouf Sayadi . According to the magazine, the choice fell on a group of men and women who they believed

In February 2019, the web magazine Cinema Escapist published an overview of, in their opinion, "the best African films from all 54 African countries" on which Boughedir's film Halfaouine - Time of Dreams can be found. The list was drawn up taking into account films by African directors whose actions are set in Africa and which were produced there. The Orden Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur , France's Legion of Honor , was awarded to Boughedir at the 2013 Cannes International Film Festival .

Career

Filmmaker

In 1968 Boughedir wrote the screenplay for his third film Mokhtar on the history of Tunisian cinema together with director Sadok Ben Aïcha . For In the Land of Tararanni - a film made up of 3 sketches by three directors based on the short stories by Ali Douagi - he contributed to the third part of the film in 1972 with his short film Pique-nique . Boughedir's documentary Caméra d'Afrique - shot over a period of 10 years - was screened in the official competition at the Cannes International Film Festival in 1983 and at the Toronto International Film Festival in 1984 . In the “Cannes Classics” section, this film was presented again in 2019 at the Cannes Film Festival as a restored copy and thus part of a restoration plan initiated by the Institut français and the French National Film Center (CNC) under the auspices of the Committee for African Film Heritage . On the occasion of the screening, Boughedir said that he would also like to be able to present his film Caméra arabe , which ran in the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 1987 and was represented at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1988 , as a restored version at the “Cannes Classics” . He also announced that he is currently working on his upcoming feature film L'Ange .

For his first feature film Halfaouine - Time of Dreams - a story about Noura, the hero of the film, and his tragicomic transition from childhood to youth in Maghreb society - written by Boughedir in 1982 and filmed in 1989 - he was shown at the Carthage Film Festival in 1990 with the Tanit d'Or and several other prizes around the world. He was also represented at the African Film Days in Montreal in the same year and was honored with the audience award at the 1991 film weekend in Würzburg . The film was shown on German television in 1998 in the Arte program . The film is still called the "most watched Tunisian film in the world".

With Ein Sommer in La Goulette , his 2nd feature film, Boughedir was represented at the nominees of the 1996 Berlin International Film Festival and was awarded at the Biennale of Arab Cinema in Paris that same year. The television film Villa Jasmin , co-produced by France 3 and Arte , based on the novel Villa Jasmin by Serge Moati , made its debut at the New York Jewish Film Festival in 2008 and was also represented at the Seattle International Film Festival in 2008 and at the Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival in 2009. With his third feature film Zizou - Parfum de printemps , which was selected as the best Arab film of the year at the Cairo International Film Festival at the end of 2016 , Boughedir represented Tunisia at the 24th edition of the New York African Film Festival 2017, which annually hosts the best films of the African Continent. The film had previously been presented out of competition in 2016 on the occasion of the 50th birthday of the Carthage Film Festival (JCC), where Boughedir received the 50th Anniversary Award “for his passion for cinema and also for his commitment in the various areas of the world Art and especially the JCC ”was honored. Boughedir has held various positions there since the festival was founded in 1966. He dedicated the award to "the Tunisian audience and the audience of the Carthage Film Festival". Boughedir wrote the script for some of his films, produced it or appeared in the role of actor, for example in his film Halfaouine - Time of Dreams or in 2017 in L'amour des hommes by Mehdi Ben Attia .

Author and co-author

In 1975, for example, Boughedir published in Jeune Afrique the article Le reflet de notre époque and Repères de l'histoire du cinéma en Tunisie: pas à pas for Le Temps Tunisie in 1981. He is the author of Le cinéma africain de A à Z und , published in 1987 published Cinémas noirs d'Afrique together with Jacques Binet and Victor Bachy in 1983 .

Festival director and jury member

Bougedhir was General Delegate for the 14th edition of the Carthage Film Festival (JCC) in 1992, was named Vice President in 2000 and 2002, and served as Festival Director in 2006. He was also an official jury member of the Cannes International Film Festival in 1991 (in the feature film category) and 2009 (in the short film category). He was a member of the jury at the 47th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival in 1997 and at the 1999 Venice International Film Festival . In 2001 he was the jury chairman of the Ouagadougou Pan-African Film and Television Festival .
