Yvonne Sassinot de Nesle (born February 17, 1937 in Saigon , French Indochina ) is a French costume designer .

Life

Born in Saigon, where she spent the first twelve years of her life, Yvonne Sassinot de Nesle studied art history at the École du Louvre , a renowned university for culture and communication in Paris , while studying in the studio of the painter Marcel Roche. He recommended her to become a costume designer. As such, Sassinot de Nesle was regularly active in French television from the early 1960s to the late 1970s, including in Nina Companéez 's multi-part television series The Ladies of the Coast (1979). At the same time she began to make costumes for theater, ballet and opera productions.

From 1982 she also designed costumes for cinema productions such as Andrzej Wajdas Danton (1983) with Gérard Depardieu in the title role. For Volker Schlöndorff's Proust film A Love by Swann from 1984, Sassinot de Nesle, who specialized in historical costumes at an early stage, received the French César film award , which was first awarded in the Best Costumes category, and a nomination for the BAFTA Award . Four more César nominations followed, including for Philippe de Broca's historical film Chouans! - Revolution and Passion (1988), set like Danton during the French Revolution . Over the years, Sassinot de Nesle also worked under the direction of Bertrand Tavernier , Francis Girod and Jean-Jacques Annaud and created film costumes for stars such as Alain Delon , Sophie Marceau , Emmanuelle Béart and Uma Thurman . Sassinot de Nesle was able to draw on her childhood experiences in the city of her birth, which also gave her a preference for silk, for Annaud's literary film The Lover (1992), which was set in Saigon .

In 2006 she was last responsible for the costumes for a film; she then devoted herself to painting. Before that, she had already worked as an illustrator and in 1983 illustrated a new French edition of Guillaume Apollinaire's The Bestiary or Entourage of Orpheus . In 2009 she received the Ordre national du Mérite for her services as a costume designer . Her husband Jean-Claude de Nesle works as a director.
