action

When the elderly Madame Vieuzac died in the southern French province in May 1968 , her family traveled to the funeral. Since the grave diggers are also on strike as a result of the general strike, the family is forced to stay longer than planned. Troubled by sparse information from the radio and a nephew who joins later and reports on the events in Paris, one believes oneself in anarchy and thinks about how to shape the future under these conditions.

De Gaulle's speech ends the general strike, the gravedigger do their work and the family members leave.

Reviews

  • Reclam's guide: “Louis Malle has created a warm-hearted and life-wise comedy in which images and moods are just as important as arguments, in which the unspoken is often best understood. With gentle irony, he observes the bourgeois bereaved, who suffer a rollercoaster of emotions due to the sparse news on a radio that keeps failing. "
  • Lexicon of international film : “A cheerful, melancholy social comedy that captures moods and feelings with a wealth of nuances and a keen sense. Between gentle melancholy and subtle cheerfulness, Louis Malle mourns both the downfall of an upper-class way of life and the preprogrammed failure of the utopia of rebellious youth. "
  • Prisma-online: “Louis Malle created a cheerful, melancholy social comedy about the failure of a revolt that moved an entire country and shook the everyday life of an upper-class family for a few hours. Malle shows an ironic picture of the French bourgeoisie with a myriad of good and funny ideas (wonderful: society's attempt to practice free love), but also a little sadness, as hardly anything remains of the rebellious era at the end of the 1960s. A convincing, mostly subtle, sometimes crude sarcastic comedy with brilliant actors. "

Awards

In 1990, Malle won the David di Donatello for A Comedy in May in the Best Foreign Film Director category . In addition, Dominique Blanc won the César for Best Supporting Actress in 1991 .
