content
In the film, Malle addresses critical issues in automobile production . It documents the exploitation, alienation and consumer behavior that result from mass production . The film was shot at only two locations, on the one hand in the production halls of the Citroën plant and on the other in an automobile fair. The film is divided into three components. The first is dedicated chronologically to the manufacturing process of the vehicles, from the individual part to the finished product. The second sequence consists of a kind of collage in which conversations, noises and impressions from an automobile fair are reproduced. The third is dedicated to the conditions of production from the point of view of the worker, in particular the relationship between man and machine.
It is a documentary about the manufacture of automobiles and about people who have to carry out monotonous work on the assembly line. Malle chose an automobile factory in France, which at that time was equipped with the most modern assembly line technology. He stayed there for a week to give the viewer a sense of the monotonous work. The recordings of the noise at work convey an authentic picture of the working conditions on an assembly line, which does not require any comment. Malle consciously lets the images and sounds speak for themselves. He commented, "I wanted the audience to feel exhausted when they came out of the movie, as exhausted as if they'd had an eight-hour shift."
