Mein Essen mit André (Original title: My Dinner with Andre ) is an American film by Louis Malle from 1981 .

action

The actor and playwright Wally has dinner with his friend André in a French restaurant in New York . The two have not seen each other for several years. Wally has a hard time reading the French menu, but his friend helps him with the translations. André tells his colleague what has happened in his life in recent years, while Wally mainly listens. He talks about his experiences with the theater experiments of the Polish director Jerzy Grotowski . Other topics of conversation are Andrés travels: with Tibetan monks to the Sahara , to the inhospitable landscape of Northern Scotland and his stay with Richard Avedon in Montauk , where he had participated in a rebirth ritual.

The conversation between the two ends with an outburst from Wally, who believes his friend wasted the last few years of his life. He tells his friend that he is of the opinion that his belief in magic is dangerous - not only for himself, André, but also for others.

In his argument, however, Wally recognizes that his pragmatic view of life is not the only correct one. Confused, Wally takes a cab around New York after dinner. On the way he thinks back to his childhood in New York and begins to see things in life in a slightly different way.

“A dialogue film that consciously restricts the means of expression and attempts a complex and literarily demanding meditation on existential, political and artistic problems. A work that requires attention and patience, but also conveys spiritual stimulation. "
