Jean-Pierre Aumont

Jean-Pierre Aumont (born January 5, 1911 in Paris , † January 29, 2001 in Saint-Tropez ) was a French actor and screenwriter .
life and work
Aumont was born in 1911 under the real name Jean-Pierre Philippe Salomons, the son of Alexandre Salomons, owner of the linen shop La Maison Du Blanc , and Suzanne Cahen. Aumont's father, whose family came from Holland , was Jewish ; his mother was French . His younger brother was the director and screenwriter François Villiers . His mother's uncle was the famous actor Georges Berr .
At the age of 16, Aumont began to study like his mother at the Conservatoire de Paris . When he first appeared on the theater stage, he was 21 years old, a year later he made his film debut with Jean de la Lune . His most important role in his early career was given in 1934 when Jean Cocteau's play La Machine Infernal was staged.
Aumont stayed in France until 1942 . When he realized that he was forced to flee from the Nazis because of his Jewish descent, he first fled to an area that was under the Vichy regime . After that he went to New York and then Hollywood to continue his acting career. He started to work at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer . However, he was not content to stay in the safe USA while his compatriots in Europe fought for their lives. Therefore, after the production of the film The Cross of Lorraine (which other staunch resistance fighters, including Charles de Gaulle , liked very much), he joined the Force Françaises Libres .
Aumont was sent to North Africa and participated in Operation Torch , particularly in Tunisia . Then he took part in the campaigns of the Allied troops in Italy and France . Aumont was seriously wounded twice during the war. He sustained the first injury while on a mission in which his brother was also involved. However, the second wound was much more severe than the first. Aumont's jeep exploded near a mined bridge. Because of his extraordinary bravery he was awarded the Legion of Honor and the Croix de guerre .
Back in Hollywood , Aumont married Dominican actress Maria Montez . With her he stood in front of the camera in his brother's first work, Die Hafenbar von Marseille in 1948. The actress Tina Aumont comes from her marriage . Maria Montez drowned in the family villa in Suresnes on September 7, 1951 , presumably after a heart attack. Aumont continued to work as an actor even after the death of his wife. He played the magician in the hugely successful film Lili with Leslie Caron . In 1956 he married the Italian actress Marisa Pavan , who starred in numerous films, including The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit . The couple also starred in one movie, John Paul Jones , in which Pavan played the lead role. Aumont only had one cameo as Louis XVI. The couple divorced in 1962, but got back together a while later. The sons Jean-Claude and Patrick emerged from the connection.
Aumont continued to work with numerous famous actors and directors . In the 1960s he starred in numerous Broadway productions . In 1989 one of his last works, A Tale of Two Cities , was published. Two years later he was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the César . Aumont was also a screenwriter .
When Jean-Pierre Aumont died of cardiovascular disease in 2001 shortly after his 90th birthday, he was one of the most awarded French actors of the 20th century. He is buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris .
