Hôtel du Nord is a film based on the novel by Eugène Dabit and directed by Marcel Carné in 1938 . This film belongs to the drama genre .
action
The Lecouvreur couple bought a small, run-down hotel in the north-east of Paris (on the St. Martin Canal ) at great financial risk . Shady characters live in the hotel, but simple workers also come and go in the hotel or live here. The couple will soon become the focal point at which the paths of all people associated with the hotel cross.
criticism
“The film is more melodramatic and less original than Carné's 'big' films from the 1930s. It is true that there are again masterful scenes in the description of everyday life in the hotel, the marginal figures are vividly portrayed with just a few lines; the actual plot, however, is overgrown with sentimental feelings. "
“This Marcel Carné film is more sentimental than ' Harbor in the Fog ', but the great character drawings, the excellent actors and the authenticity of the milieu make 'Hôtel du Nord' one of the most important films of 'poetic realism' in French film of the thirties. "
background
Eugène Dabit, who wrote the novel for this film in 1931, tells the story of his parents in an almost autobiographical manner.

- Location
Since the original location was an important transhipment point, Carné went to the Billancourt film studios , where Alexandre Trauner recreated the entire district.
