Axel Stelzner (born July 22, 1937 in Dresden ) is a German doctor and university professor .

Life and work

Axel Stelzner was born in Dresden on July 22, 1937. After graduating from the Martin Luther High School in Eisenach , he began studying medicine at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena in 1955 , which he completed in 1960. After a clinical year, he joined the Hygiene Institute at the University of Jena in 1962 , where he passed the specialist examination for medical microbiology in 1966 . Until 1980 he worked as a specialist and senior physician at the facility now renamed the Institute for Medical Microbiology. Furthermore, he worked as a specialist advisor at the District Hygiene Institute Gera - at least temporarily. 1963 doctorate he became Dr. med. (Dissertation work: Investigations on unspecific serum bactericides: taking into account the properdin level ) and in 1971 Dr. med. habil. (Dissertation: Investigations on the clinical-immunological and seroepidemiological informative value of immunhemolytically standardized detection methods for complement fixation and complement fixation reactions ), each at the Jena University.

Stelzner worked from 1980 to 1991 at the Central Institute for Microbiology and Experimental Therapy of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (after he had left the FSU Jena in 1980) as head of department for immunopathology and virology . From 1992 until his retirement in 2002 he was professor and director of the newly founded University Institute for Virology and at the same time as head of department for drug testing at the Hans Knöll Institute for drug research and infection biology in Jena. So far, Stelzner has published 252 scientific and 16 cultural-historical publications as well as 15 book chapters and 14 trend analyzes. He gave 502 scientific and 107 cultural-historical lectures (including posters). Stelzner is a member of numerous scientific and historical societies and associations as well as a member of the Historical Commission for Thuringia .

Stelzner lives in Göttern , has been married since 1965 and has three children. Here he is involved in the work of the parish council and in the church's preservation of monuments, he also works on a voluntary basis as an organist.

Stelzner remained independent until 1989, became a member of the democratic movement in 1989 and joined the CDU in October 1990 . From 1990 to 1991 he was a member of the Thuringian state parliament . He co-founded the new federal state and contributed to the clarification of open political-historical questions (state capital, state coat of arms, etc.). Stelzner co-founded the Rotary Club Jena in 1990 and was district governor from 2001 to 2002 (D.1950). He is also active in the national fight against poliomyelitis.
