The Martin-Luther-Gymnasium in Eisenach is a state-approved high school sponsored by the Evangelical School Foundation in Central Germany.
history
The school dates back to 1185 when the St. Georgen Latin School was founded. This building, which Martin Luther visited from 1498 to 1501, has not been standing since 1507. The current building, which houses the school, was built in 1230 in honor of Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia . It was originally a Dominican monastery that was dissolved with the Reformation. At the urging of Martin Luther , this facility was used as a school from 1544. The Latin school he had attended and which Johann Sebastian Bach also attended moved in. In 1840 the school was renamed Carl-Friedrich-Gymnasium after the reigning sovereign Karl Friedrich , in 1946 in Luther-Gymnasium and in 1950 in Luther-Oberschule. After the "liquidation" of the high school, an institute for teacher training (IfL) was set up in the building in 1960. At the instigation of former pupils and with the help of the Verbundener school, it was able to be re-established in 1994 as the Martin Luther Gymnasium. On October 31, 1995, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new west wing took place. This was completely rebuilt and now houses, among other things, a physics and chemistry room.
