Karl Friedrich Koch (born November 15, 1813 in Berka , † September 5, 1872 in Eisenach ) was a German teacher , grammarian and philologist .

Life

Friedrich Koch was the son of poor parents. Thanks to a gift of Latin grammar, he was able to expand his education beyond the normal level of the local elementary school. Therefore he was allowed to attend the Eisenach grammar school until 1832 and was then able to start studying Protestant theology at the University of Jena . After graduating in 1835, he was first court master in Eisenach and then founded his own Progymnasium . When the Eisenach secondary school was founded in 1843 , he got a job as a professor there, which he held until his death. At the same time he gave up his career as a clergyman .

Koch went to England in 1845 to take private lessons and improve his knowledge of the English language. His later published multi-volume grammar of the English language found great international recognition. Accordingly, he was made an honorary member of the Philological Society of London in 1868. On March 10, 1848, he was awarded a doctorate in philosophy by the University of Jena .
