Pawel Semjonowitsch Lungin ( Russian Павел Семёнович Лунгин ; born July 12, 1949 in Moscow , Soviet Union ) is a Russian screenwriter and film director.

Life

Lungin is the son of the screenwriter Semjon Lungin , who wrote films for Alexander Mitta , Elem Klimow and Larissa Schepitko , among others , and the translator Lilianna Lungina . He studied theoretical linguistics at Moscow State University (MGU). After graduating in 1971, he worked as a mathematician and computer scientist at the Institute for Social Research of the Academy of Sciences in Moscow. In 1973 he moved to Literaturnaja Gazeta as a science editor .

In 1974/75 Lungin took part in a course for screenwriters and directors in Moscow, where Giorgi Danelia was one of his teachers. Since 1977 he has been working full-time as a screenwriter.

Lungin made his first film as a director in 1990. With this first film Taxi Blues , starring Pyotr Nikolajewitsch Mamonow and Pyotr Suitschenko , he took part in the competition at the Cannes Film Festival in the same year and won the prize for best director. He later took part in the Cannes competition with two other films ( Luna Park , 1992, and The Russian Wedding , 2000, which received a special jury prize). Taxi Blues was also Lungin's first collaboration with the Russian cult musician Pyotr Mamonow, the lyricist and singer of the band Swuki Mu , who later starred in two other films by Lungin ( Die Insel , 2006; Zar , 2009).

Lungin has lived in Paris with his family since 1992 ; in 2000 he founded his own production company in Moscow. His film Die Insel received six Golden Eagles ( Золотой орёл ) in 2006 , including one for best film and best director, and in 2007 the Nika also for best film and best director. At the 31st Moscow International Film Festival , Lungin was chairman of the competition jury in 2009. Also in 2009, his period film Tsar over two years in the life of Ivan the Terrible was shown in Cannes in the side series Un Certain Regard .
