Ostrov - The Island (Russian original title: Остров , Die Insel ) is a feature film produced in Russia in 2006 about the life of a monk of the Orthodox Church . The film had moderate success at the international film festival in Venice in 2006. As the most successful Russian film of 2007, it won the film prizes Nika and "Golden Eagle" ( Золотой ор Filmл ) in 6 categories each. The shooting took place in the Rabocheostrovsk settlement near the city of Kem , Karelia on the beach of the White Sea . The film was released in Switzerland on March 1, 2007.

During the Second World War , the sailor Anatoli and his captain Tichon are captured by the Germans . The German officer offers Anatoli to shoot his captain and to stay alive himself. Anatoly shoots Tikhon and Tikhon falls from the ship. The Germans blow up the ship. Anatoly survives and finds refuge in a monastery, where he is plagued by feelings of guilt. After thirty years, Anatoly, still plagued by guilt, is a monk whom people go to for advice. Anatoly casts a demon out of a young woman. This woman's father is Tikhon. He was only wounded by the shot and survived. He forgives Anatoly. Anatoly foresees his own death and is preparing for it.
