action

Edmont "Momon" Vidal is the former leader of the legendary criminal gang "Les Lyonnais", who is now enjoying his retirement age with his wife Janou. When his childhood best friend and former accomplice Serge Suttel is arrested for drug dealing, Momon's life is thrown out of whack. On the one hand, he has promised his wife that he will never again engage in criminal activity, on the other hand, he feels obliged to Serge.

In the 1970s, the "Les Lyonnais" gang was famous and notorious in France for their bank and money transport robberies. Momon has worked his way up from being a simple gypsy boy in organized crime and thinks he is at the peak of his creativity. However, after being betrayed, each receives prison sentences of different lengths.

Momon wants to help Serge, whom he has not seen for 13 years, because he betrayed former gang member Nick Le Grec and would not survive long in prison. The older gang members organize a liberation squad that is successful, but kills two policemen. Angry about this, Serge shoots his daughter Lilou's friend, who is responsible for this. In the meantime, Momon is being harassed by Inspector Max Brauner, who suspects that Momon definitely has something to do with Serge's liberation. Momon hid Serge and his daughter in a country house.

After people from Le Grec track down the hiding place, they shoot former gang member Christo and Lilou. Serge is currently on the road with Momon. When both discover the murders, they seek out the leader of Le Grec's entourage and shoot him. In addition, Momon travels to Marbella , where Nick Le Grec has now settled. He still suspects that he betrayed his own people back then. Momon kills him in anger.

Again, Commissioner Brauner tries to talk to Momon. Brauner knows exactly who is responsible for these murders. He gives Momon an old confession from the time of his arrest, which shows that Serge was the traitor of "Les Lyonnais". He asks Momon to take him to Serge. In return, he'll forget about Momon's murders.

Deeply disappointed, Momon goes to Serge, confronts him and hands him a gun to judge himself. As Momon leaves the building that is surrounded by the police, Serge shoots himself.

Reviews

“It is no coincidence that the viewer feels reminded of 'Once upon a time in America ' when Tcheky Karyo and Gerard Lanvin lurk around each other like Noodles and Max, while the past takes on a hard shape in stylish flashbacks. Olivier Marchal ( '36 - Deadly Rivals ') delivers a small masterpiece and does not have to fear comparison with the greats of the genre. Action-packed, blood-drenched gentlemen's story just to the taste of gangster film fans. "

“Hard, melancholy drama in the style of French gangster cinema of the sixties and seventies. Conclusion: Top gangster cinema that knows no redemption. "

“Director Olivier Marchal has once again succeeded in presenting extremely exciting thriller cinema, which lives above all from its actors, the dialogues, the well-timed action and its depth. Despite a too leisurely and changing tempo and a bland finale, 'A Gang Story' proves to be a gripping crime story that shouldn't be missed. "

"Credible and played with verve, confidently told in flashbacks, the gangster saga that breathes the epic breath of French genre classics, but is told with more contemporary pace and a lot of action."
