action

Noredin is a major in a Cairo police station. His wife was killed in an accident. In addition to his cop salary, he accepts protection money from traders. He shares this with his uncle Kammal Mostafa, who is also his boss.

One day just before the start of the Arab Spring , his uncle assigns him a new case. The body of a young woman has been found in a luxury hotel. In the room, Noredin examines the woman's handbag. In addition to the cash, he pocketed a pick-up slip from a photo shop. It soon turns out that the dead woman is the famous singer Lalena. Noredin suspects that a housekeeper could give him clues about the killer. In fact, the Sudanese maid Salwa had seen the killer come out of the room, but had since gone home. Unfortunately, the management doesn't know the girl's address or surname. The name of the guest who booked the murder room is also only known to the owner of the hotel.

Noredin and his assistant Momo are looking for the maid. Noredin picks up the photos at the photo shop. They show the well-known building contractor Hatem Shafiq having sex with the killed Lalena. Noredin drives to a Shafiq construction site, but flashes off at the building contractor. His uncle tells him that the case has been closed as a "suicide" even though the dead man's throat had been slit. The building contractor also has very good relations with the government.

Lalena's friend Gina inquires about Noredin's fate on Noredin's territory. Like the murdered Lalena, Gina sings in a luxury nightclub . Noredin looks for her there in the evening and both go from there to Gina's luxury maisonette , where they make love in Gina's bed.

The next day, Noredin was asked to report to the State Security for an interview. There you ask Noredin whether he knows Gina and when Noredin says no, you show him the pictures of the night of love with Gina. You and Lalena worked for the Tunisian pimp Nagui.

Noredin manages to arrest Nagui at a drug hangout. Because he was in a different area, Noredin has to buy the suspect from his colleagues. Noredin orders his colleague Momo to take care of Nagui in the station. The next morning, however, the pimp is dead and Momo is tortured by the police because they want to know where Noredin is.

A killer is seen killing Salwa's Sudanese friend and an elderly Sudanese man who is referred to as the boss. Salwa can barely escape over the roof. Noredin arrests the contractor. He hires a well-known lawyer, but the public prosecutor has received the order "from the top" to actually arrest Shafiq.

Demonstrations can be seen everywhere on the streets. The police fire from the roof of their precinct with semi-automatic weapons and hit both demonstrators and soldiers who are supposed to keep the demonstrators in check. A group of Sudanese - including the maid Salwa - is arrested on the street and taken to the police station. Salwa does not want to be deported and identifies herself as a witness in the Lalena murder case. Noredin questions her in his car. Shortly before, two men on a motorcycle shot at Noredin with an automatic weapon and killed his companion, a trader.

Noredin flees the killers in his car with Salwa. He leaves the car at a gas station to buy cigarettes. A man who has chased them wants to kill Salwa, but she can kill him with Noredin's gun. Noredin gives Salwa money and advises her to leave the unsafe country. He then examines the corpse and finds that the killer is an employee of the State Security. Then he goes to his uncle.

He has just released Shafiq for a lot of money. Noredin is appalled, but his uncle assures that everything is fine now because of the money. Noredin tells him about the body of the State Security killer in his car. The uncle removes the license plates from Noredin's car and sets it on fire. He explains to Noredin the blackmail model in which he was also involved. Gina and her friend Lalena lured men into their bed, their pimp Nagui photographed them there and extorted money from customers. However, the blackmailed Shafiq fell in love with Lalena. She implored him to leave his wife and marry her. To add to the emphasis, Lalena had stolen the compromising images from her pimp. So Shafiq hired state security to kill Lalena. Gina too had to die unnecessarily.

Kammal is now taking Noredin back to Cairo in his car, where they get caught in a demonstration. You get out and continue on foot. Noredin wants to arrest his uncle. When the protesters recognize Noredin as a police officer with his pistol in hand, he is beaten up. The uncle disappears into the crowd with the wallet and the demonstration continues.

production

Filming began in Egypt and continued in Casablanca after the Egyptian authorities withdrew the filming permit.

reception

“'The Nile Hilton Affair' is a well-done, atmospherically dense film. Tarik Saleh captured the charged atmosphere of the city of Cairo in the revolutionary year 2011 in expressive pictures, accompanied by a suggestive sound created by Fredrik Jonsäter. You are surrounded by the sound of Kairos, that endless cacophony of horns and traffic noise. "
