A royal exchange (original title: L'échange des princesses ) is a Belgian - French historical drama from 2017 . The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Chantal Thomas (2013), directed by Marc Dugain .

action

In order to secure the peace after the War of the Spanish Succession , the regent of France, Philippe d'Orléans , arranges a double wedding. The French King Louis XV. , 11 years old, is to marry the Spanish princess Maria Anna Viktoria , who is only 3 years old. In return, the 14-year-old Spanish heir to the throne Ludwig is to marry the 12-year-old daughter of the French regent, Louise Élisabeth d'Orléans .

The princesses are exchanged at the Franco-Spanish border. However, the planned marriages are difficult. Although the Spanish heir to the throne falls in love with his fiancée straight away, she is rebellious, repeatedly violates the protocol and does not want to know anything about her husband. When Ludwig's father, King Philip V , abdicates, Louise Élisabeth becomes Queen of Spain at her husband's side. As the two of them got along better and better, Ludwig fell ill with smallpox and died at the age of only 17. Louise Élisabeth also falls ill, but recovers. Having become useless to the Spanish king, she is sent back to France.

Meanwhile, the situation at the French court is also complicated. The Spanish Princess Maria Anna Viktoria likes her fiancé Louis XV. very good, but he doesn't know what to do with the child princess. Ultimately, the engagement is broken and Maria Anna Viktoria is sent back to Spain because the king wants to become engaged to an older princess who is more likely to give him offspring.

The marriage project has thus failed.

Reviews

Michael Meyns from programmkino.de praises the actors and the equipment, but criticizes the fact that the film lacks plot and drama.

Falk Straub from kino-zeit.de gives a much more positive verdict, praises the camera positions and editing, and above all he once again highlights the acting performance of the young actors: " More than about the razor- sharp dialogues, Dugain tells this sad historical chapter about the looks of his admirable young actors . Anamaria Vartolomei packs all the boredom of her character into it, Kacey Mottet Klein all the stupid sexual desire of his. Igor Van Dessel only needs one glance to bring the sadness and the heavy burden that rests on his much too narrow shoulders into the cinema Finally, a real highlight is Juliane Lepoureau. Her curiosity and alertness are phenomenal. Despite the tender age of her figure, she is the most mature and therefore most worthy at court. A glimmer of hope in a dark epoch. "

At Rotten Tomatoes , the film got a rating of 100% out of 5 reviews and 50% in the audience rating.
